Cheapest alternative would be just to leave a few hairs for the sake of cloning.

And since the internet is forever, they can just extrapolate my personality from all my activity. Lolcats, yiff porn, excessive sarcasm, and occasional moments of caring should about cover it.

One of the best features of nature is, that we die. We all die. Plants, animals, micro organisms, name it, every thing dies and makes room to renew.
That is good for the planet, good for natural selection, good to get rid of the bad evolutions (45! and me for instance).

If you have a dream to live forever: Go to a mosque on Friday, a synagogue on Saturday or a church on Sunday and praise their God. They hold the keys to eternal life in His Kingdom, and almost climate neutral on top of that. Only downside, you have to be a good person to achieve it.
The time that you could buy tickets (indulgentia) for it, like for Disney's Magic Kingdom, are long gone.

It seems to me that my genetic clone is not me, but my twin sister. That might even be true of my corpse if reviving it doesn’t reboot the same mind.

So I don’t actually have the right to impose my mind on her.

In that case, saving a stem cell for replication would be the same thing - not me, but a twin sister, one cursed with aged and inferior genes.

But scanning a mind and uploading it has no victims. However, it’s not at all clear to me such a replicant is me either, rather than a new kind of life form that just happens to have my memories in its resources.

Star Trek notwithstanding, it’s not even clear to me that the person who gets out of the transporter at the other end is actually me. I might accept that, if I had valuable skills and transporting me was part of some kind of survival situation like a war effort or an emergency colonization.

There’s also the chance my brain copy might be found by another species aeons in the future, and they’d study me and feel sorry for my fate, without ever fully understanding.

Belief in a “spirit” isn’t necessary to any of these conclusions.

I love scifi that looks at whether an exact functioning duplicate is indeed the original person. I saw a tv episode once (prob from the 1980s Twilight Zone) about a transporter that destroyed the original body only after confirming the copy made it through intact.

A communications glitch happened during a woman's transport so the sending facility couldn't talk to the receiver for a day or two. In the meantime they had to take the woman out of the machine and let her walk around and experience life... and of course she meets the love of her life. Then they finally get confirmation the copy made it through, and the logical unfeeling aliens running the transporter force the now-different original to get in the machine to get incinerated.

Spooky!

This is just the kind of thing I would worry about.

“All right, but you know Star Trek, and ‘Beam me up, Scotty’? How they can teleport people around?”
“Yeah. The transporters.”
“Do you know how they work?”
“Just … special effects. CGI or whatever they used.”
“No, I mean within the universe of the show. They work by breaking down your molecules, zapping you over a beam, and putting you back together on the other end.”
“Sure.”
“That is what scares me. I can’t watch it. I find it too disturbing.”
I shrugged. “I don’t get it.”
“Well, think about it. Your body is just made of a few different types of atoms. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and so on. So this transporter machine, there is no reason in the world to break down all of those atoms and then send those specific atoms thousands of miles away. One oxygen atom is the same as another, so what it does is send the blueprint for your body across the beam. Then it reassembles you at the destination, out of whatever atoms it has nearby. So if there is carbon and hydrogen at the planet you’re beaming down to, it’ll just put you together out of what it has on hand, because you get the exact same result.”
“Sure."
“So it’s more like sending a fax than mailing a letter. Only the transporter is a fax machine that shreds the original. Your original body, along with your brain, gets vaporized. Which means what comes out the other end isn’t you. It’s an exact copy that the machine made, of a man who is now dead, his atoms floating freely around the interior of the ship. Only within the universe of the show, nobody knows this. Meanwhile, you are dead. Dead for eternity. All of your memories and emotions and personality end, right there, on that platform, forever. Your wife and children and friends will never see you again. What they will see is this unnatural photocopy of you that emerged from the other end. And in fact, since transporter technology is used routinely, all of the people you see on that ship are copies of copies of copies of long-dead, vaporized crew members. And no one ever figures it out. They all continue to blithely step into this machine that kills one hundred percent of the people who use it, but nobody realizes it because each time, it spits out a perfect replacement for the victim at the other end.”

Star Trek's writers completely refuse to tackle that issue, by the way, lol. They won't even have the characters talk about it anymore. There's an episode of Enterprise where the characters mention the fact that the problem exists, but then they just say that the idea that the transporter kills the original and what comes out is just a copy was "silly and settled long ago", without actually getting into it. I think there's even an episode of TNG where the whole plot focuses on what a person experiences INSIDE the transporter beam during a transport - which pretty much proves that in the world of the show, you have continuous consciousness during the process, so you're definitely the same person coming out at the end of it. Like a whoooole lot of treknology, it's something that "just works"; the idea that there's a lot of solid scientific basis behind the show is....popularly exaggerated by its fans.

Although, the same thing could be said of its influence. Star Trek has done a lot to inspire visual design and aesthetics of modern technology (though not really the technology itself); but sometimes this relationship is an illusion. A good example of that is flip-phones. Star Trek fans love to say that the design of flip-phones was "inspired by" the old Trek communicators; but it really wasn't - flip phones were created to give a phone more actual working surface area to split between the screen and the buttons. The thing that flipped up on the old Star Trek communicators was just supposed to be an antenna, which was completely hidden inside and invisible in mobile phones by the time flip-phones were invented. The visual similarity is more of a happy coincidence.

Talk of the transporter issue reminds me of the philosophy class on theory of mind which I took and whether the mind is the brain or the mind is a function of the brain, (or the mind is something else as in Cartesian Dualism). Which side you sit on seems to determine how you view such things as Star Trek transporters or brain scanning.

Look at how quickly water stops flowing over the gate in the foreground once that middle one collapses. And the back one too. And just look at the water line on the far bank - the level of that lake dropped fast. It's kinda fascinating!

Reminds me a little of:

Modern simulation of the landslide and megatsunami:

Maybe not really a fair comparison, because that dam didn't actually fail.

Milo is back and calling for Civil War 2, the alt-right boogaloo, because waa waa.

But when someone takes away your freedom
... Like how people are being locked in cages? Like the for-profit prison industry always in search of bodies with the assistance of police who arrest people for breathing while black?

Your speech
Like how people who protested the destruction of the ACA were locked up? Like how protesters are routinely brutalized by police and hired security thugs or run down by people who adhere to your philosophies?

Your ability to protect yourself and your family
Like how parents send their children off to school each day wondering whether their school will be next for a mass shooting? Like how women will now have to fear rape even more because if they get pregnant and wish to end it they will face decades in prison or in some lawmakers fevered wishes, the death penalty?

In preparation for defense of the constitution
The constitution that is being violated each and every day the Orange one walks in the White House?

Yeah, Milo you're on the wrong side and you (in the proverbial wish for a civil war) are on the wrong side. Also, go back home.
