I thought there should be a forum, or at least a thread for just general discussion about role play.... what sims are fun to go to, what is fun to do and what your pet peeves are.

One general pet peeve of mine is that I noticed is that many "characters" people role play fall into one of two major pit falls:

1) Their character is entirely 1 dimensional. ...like they are an edgy badass and have no other personality traits or any flexibility for situations where this might not be optimal.

2) People can't help but just role play themselves most of the time (this is me!)

I like doing role play scenarios, but my problem is I basically have topic ADHD, so I over commit, then completely back out when distracted.

Especially in SL.

Also all of the most interesting concepts I have found are primarily done by furries, which, I am not really into. I am not going into dirty details but frankly, "weird shit."

Is this for, shall we say, *elite* role players?

Over committing is a common problem... both in the long and short term. I know people who get themselves involved in TONS of schemes that they never follow through with... I also see people start shit within a single RP session that they will then have amnesia about when someone else responds to what they said. A very common example is the edgy badass character says something belligerent, then acts like they are defending themselves when I respond, lol.

One other thing I've encountered a time or two in sims that causes problems... when someone's amazing Mary Sue type character had to do EVERYTHING, everywhere, all at once!

Want to RP a bad ass warrior? A sought after lady of the evening? Royalty? A great scientist? Owner of the popular tavern? Head of the thieves guild? A pirate captain? Go for it! ...but if the very same character did all those things, it often creates some practical problems.... For example, I remember this one person who would try to be a bartender at a popular joint on sim but they were extremely rude because they also needed to show they were a BAD ASS WARRIOR in addition to being the bartender and it was weird....

I've noticed this kind of thing in Gor. Everybody wants to be the badass or princess hot stuff. No, I never read the books. I think Gor is interesting from an digital anthropological perspective.

Dolcett doesn't suffer from this problem, though. If you don't know what it is and are squeamish or easily triggered by anything, do not look it up. Basically, winning and losing is sort of built into it a way that adverts a lot of the badasses and princess hot stuffs. The men generally eat the women, who want to be eaten. Ya, it's basically fetish cannibalism . . .

I know. Not everybody's bag of tea. And it's arguably very misogynistic. I use it for exploring identity and mortality and stuff, though. A character can go though all the simple stuff, while I still have a larger plot for them, that occasionally drips through. For instance, a basic scene could always happen with light references to my larger character plot, which often doesn't change the course of action but, can make for interesting backstory.

Basically, my plot for this is that a clone has began to recover past memories and rebel slightly against the dominate ideologies that it should embrace, meaning that while it has a desire to die to serve the community, it also has a desire to live to learn the truth. Later in the story line, I can just say whatever iteration of the clone escaped to some other sim/place and died and/or was re-cloned and shape whatever story around that into it, which usually allows others to drive the story for a scene however they want without creating any problems.

So my thoughts on how the badasses and princess hot stuffs always want to be the hero is that they should attempt to do more open and vague story-lines that include ways in which they fail and don't always win.

I don't know anything about elite RPing, though. I tend to avoid them.

Sorry, I thought this thread was interesting and made a post about people who RP eating eat other. I guess I don't have to hit the blue button. But I kind of just want to.

I had this happen once, it was quite odd and unexected, but I like to please people too much.

Some random person in the Firestorm support group was looking for vague help, so I messaged them, and they were a bit coy but I encouraged then whatever it was was fine.

They wanted to RP being eated. And boy the Firestorm support group is a weird place to ask for that. So I said, ok sure, why not, I am invested now.

And they gave me a script, and if I veered at all they got kind of upset, so I just, cooy pasted the script.

Then I never saw then again. I even poked a bit in IMs occasionally when I thought about it.

Even if you expect it, it can go sideways pretty fast and have a pretty crazy outcome.

Lol, I bet.

Pretty weird. Occasionally, somebody would be too inflexible and I'd just have to poof. But mostly I had fun with it when I did it a lot. I could even see a script working for RP, like a scene guide or something, provided it was okej to deviate or was presided over by a more neutral dungeon master type in a group setting maybe.
