I just want to know why so many people want to kill so many other people with trolleys? That seems like the real trolley problem to me.

Most of the people I've met do not have an obsession with trolleys. Though admittedly, the selection process for that group is biased.

Also: F--- the trolly. This is why we have engineering and safety standards such as fail-over systems which are, unfortunately, written in blood. The *real* trolly problem is socio-politico, and involves not a defective trolly but a defective system of govenance and oversight.

The real life "trolly problem" has been solved. At least for trains, if there is someone in the tracks, the train engineer slaps a stop button and leaves the cabin so they do not have to witness the trauma of what does or does not happen.

So for the trolly version, you can just spin the lever and close your eyes because the liability is in the negligent trolly company, you are just the driver.

A thought on the trolley problem: pulling the leaver half way prevents the trolley from going onto either track, and forces a derailment. Problem solved, no one gets hurt, except for the driver who's only knocked about for a little bit considering the relatively low speed of trolleys and the opportunity to brace for an impact.

Or better yet, the derailment kills the philosophy professor. No more trolley problems!
