There's a lunar eclipse going on right now, if you're not doing anything and have a clear sky. Totality begins in about half an hour from the timestamp of this post, but Moon is already super dim and red from where I am, and you've got a good two hours or so to get out and see it. :)

CREATED ON CLOUD APPRECIATION DAY, 2022
Cloud Appreciation Day, 2022 took place on Friday September 16th. This was an internationally recognized day on which people around the world were encouraged to spend a few moments appreciating the beauty of the sky. To mark the occasion, the Cloud Appreciation Society launched a Memory Cloud Atlas onto which cloudspotters around the world could upload photgraphs of their sky and record how it made them feel. The Memory Cloud Atlas serves as a snapshot on a single day of our collective views on the most dynamic, evocative and accessible part of nature: the sky. Explore the Atlas to see what everyone posted...

Mauna Loa is powering up.

The world's largest active volcano has erupted in Hawaii for the first time in nearly four decades, officials said.

Mauna Loa erupted at 11:30 p.m. local time Sunday (4:30 a.m. ET Monday), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was the first eruption since 1984, according to its Hawaii Volcano Observatory daily update.

The eruption began in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the agency said, as it upgraded the volcano's alert level from an "advisory" to a "warning."
"At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities," the agency said in a news release. "Winds may carry volcanic gas and possibly fine ash and Pele’s hair downwind," it said, referring to a type of lava.

Yeah so far it's a lazy and unthreatening lava flow, nothing spectacular really, but I mean the biggest volcano in the world erupting at all is still an exciting deal.

Note that this volcano is different from Kilauea, which is the one that recently erupted and had a crater-floor collapse and refill. Both are children of the Hawaii Hotspot but the two volcanoes aren't really "connected" in the sense that they don't share any plumbing and one's erupting doesn't necessarily have any effect on the other.

This is the level of natural disaster I find acceptable.
