‘I don’t date at all now’: one woman’s journey into the darkest corners of the manosphere | Men | The Guardian
Her book, No One Wants to See Your D*ck, takes a deep dive into the negatives. It covers Davies’s experiences in the digital world – that includes cyberflashing such as all those unsolicited dick pics – as well as the widespread use of her images on pornography sites, escort services, dating apps, sex chats (“Ready for Rape? Role play now!” with her picture alongside it). However, the book also shines a light on the dark online men’s spaces, what they’re saying, the “games” they’re playing. “I wanted to show the reality of what men are doing,” says Davies. “People will say: ‘It’s not all men’ and no, it isn’t, but it also isn’t a small number of weirdos on the dark web in their mum’s basements. These are forums with millions of members on mainstream sites such as Reddit, Discord and 4chan. These are men writing about their wives, their mums, their mate’s daughter, exchanging images, sharing women’s names, socials and contact details, and no one – not one man – is calling them out. They’re patting each other on the back.”
Davies saw things she almost wishes she hadn’t. A game called “Risk”, for example, which has various versions but the premise is that someone posts a woman’s picture and if someone else “catches” it – by responding within five minutes – the original poster has to give him the woman’s full name and socials. One man was “risking” pictures of his mate’s wife and daughter. When asked how his own wife would react if she knew, he replied: “Divorce, no questions asked. She’s a bit of a prude. The risk makes it hotter somehow.”

Heard of this book last week. Although it’s an important subject to write about, I don't need any convincing, so I don't think it’s one I will read. It would just make me angry and crush whatever’s left in my belief in basic human decency.

Considering what happened in France with Gisèle Pelicot, and that all the rapes were committed by so-called normal men around town, yeah, it isn’t just some weirdos in their basements.

I definitely think it should be illegal to send unsolicited nudes everywhere. ...a lot of dumbasses can't figure out the difference between them sending unsolicited dick picks versus them CHOOSING to go look at a woman's pictures. It's disturbing how much of the population is baffled by basic ideas of consent. Manosphere spaces are full of degenerate dumbshits with the delusion they are super "logical."

I'm also in a few online communities that are very sexual and notice a SHARP difference between the ones that try to stay "safe" for women and those that don't. The difference is maybe getting sharper, and I've lost tolerance for the ones that don't.

...wow..... this kind of shit makes me feel all the more vindicated for not trying to date anymore in RL.

Kind of related: I used to not think porn was a huge deal.... now I view it like hard liquor in that I don't think it should be banned but yes there are BIG problems with it... and it seems to be a lot worse for kids who are exposed to huge amounts very early on. When we were kids, finding porn required actual effort and was a lot more tame than it is now. All the boys and girls still saw it, but it was like having your first sip of beer versus chugging whiskey now.

I've seen tons of arguments online between teenagers that reveal just how warped many of them have become due to ubiquitous online porn that wasn't so accessible when I was that age. A common example is that the go to way to put down a young woman for being cute seems to be telling her she looks like she has an onlyfans.. I also remember seeing a really freaking dumb argument between a girl and her dumb boyfriend where he was telling her her totally normal looking face post was bad because she looks like she would have an onlyfans and was "making blowjob eyes" at the camera.... the comments were telling her to dump him, which she should, but it was so sad that this young man and many others like him seem to have little knowledge of women that didn't come from porn or anime.

I think the best thing we can realistically do about this is to push a lot more sex education in schools. It's also VITAL now that sex education acknowledges that kids WILL see tons of porn and they need to directly address misinformation from it. Worst thing we can do just leave kids to satisfy their natural curiosity with porn and shady online communities. I worry this will be a hard sell in the dumbass USA because many parents will want to pretend they can just keep their kids in the dark.

Yeah I don't see what the difference is between a guy who does this and the guy with a trenchcoat who goes around flashing women and children at the park that everyone would agree is a sicko. We put the second guy in jail and stick him on the sex offender registry without much of a thought, but it feels like a victim who wants justice against the first guy usually has to file a lawsuit for harassment or something on their own dime and that's the most that can be done.

It's been at least a decade with that divide starting in the groups. I feel like I noticed it ten years back at least, starting to see groups pop up to whom my first reaction was "What the actual fuck?" Hard core misogyny and racism, usually with a heavy right leaning political stance, often with a lot of god and jesus mixed in. ...or in short patriarchy and manosphere bullshit. The first few waves of incels grew older, but instead of growing up they just turned even more hateful and organized, with ever crazier spirals of logic.

Note that I am into some very non-mainstream things myself. However the line is actually quite easy: If it does not include freely given consent from a sane adult partner, then it's off the table and everyone should examine themselves closely for even considering it.

It's pretty clear with the customer base too. I don't get even a fraction of the hate and entitlement that female presenting creators have to put up with. It's sickening/enraging, and no longer just lone crazies.

Yeah... it didn't suddenly happen, it evolved over time and goes very far back. Unmoderated communities always degenerate into what are basically chan boards. Without some rule against it, the degenerates, nazi's and pedos chase away anyone with an iota of sanity.

Haha, nice... I know wholesome anime and anime aimed at women is a thing. ...though the chuds I'm talking about wouldn't watch this for fear it would turn them gay! haha.
Well, that show is actually one of the most popular animes right now.

If you want to give it a try, watch at least the first four episodes. That's usually enough to figure out if a show is worth watching or not.

I don't know much about anime.... but surely you see my point. I'm not saying anime in general is somehow bad. But you also surely know about some of the freaky shit I'm referring to.

At least there's "The Apothecary Diaries".

I freaking love that series. I'm on my 3rd rewatch on Netflix now, and have read some of the novels. It's going to be one of the enduring philosophical greats, up there with cowboy bebop and ghost in the shell in overall quality and name recognition.

Yeah, I understood what you meant. I just wanted to give you a heads-up and let you know that one of the most beloved and cherished animes right now is 100% in support of female empowerment. I found that notion quite encouraging and wanted to share it with you.

I am sometimes surprised how few dick pics get sent through SL, though sometimes they do show up.

My go-to response on receiving dick pics is "How cute! It looks just like a penis, only smaller."
