Fingers crossed that this series is worth a thread of its own. I took a leap of faith and subscribed to Apple TV+ with the very flimsy excuse that Mrs. Beebo could also watch the two or three Reds baseball games that are shown exclusively on this stream.

Martha Wells is apparently quite pleased with the first season, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Yeah, I’m a little afraid it’ll lean in too much into the humour, but I’m still so excited.

Loved Silo. I had a hard time getting into For All Mankind. Loved Slow Horses and Severance, though the may take a few episodes before you get really into it. The Gorge was a fun popcorn movie.

I flew through the first 2 seasons; I really enjoyed it. Something changed with the 3rd. A little less alternate history and more sci-fi...soap opera vibes are starting to kick in, which I seen way too much with sci-fi on tv. Feels like I'm working at watching it now, so might stop before going into season 4. Silo is next!

2 minute "inside look":

It does look like they're leaning heavily into the comedy (sorry, Isa).

The books ARE funny, in a wry and sardonic vein. It's one of the reasons I love them so much. The darkness is between the lines, in the way murderbot has been treated as a thing rather than a sentient being. It's hard to portray that in a trailer, however, which is all about highlights and not the subtext.

From a Reddit poster who saw the first two episodes at a NYC premiere event:
They did a great job. In spirit, it’s Murderbot.

Some genuinely laugh out loud funny moments but definitely less goofy then the trailer made it look.

Judicious use of voiceover to capture Murderbot’s snark, really effective use of the Sanctuary Moon clips to show how it is learning in real time (also, funny).

Great production value.

They of course have to spell some things out a little more obviously for the new audience who doesn’t have the knowledge from the books - but I think they did a good job of balancing needs of new and old audiences.

Loved seeing more of the human crew.

Overall I was just really happy with it. It was definitely made by people who appreciate the books.

Gizmodo likes it.

On a distant planet in a future where space travel through wormholes is routine—and corny soap operas are considered “premium entertainment”—surveyors make a discovery that would surely be deadly, if not for the Security Unit they’ve reluctantly brought with them. That’s Murderbot, Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi venture, which layers that premise with many nuances, delights, shocks, and multidimensional characters, including the robot.

Especially the robot.

/me gets ready to post the following everywhere

It's NOT a robot!

I've watched the first 2 episodes, and...

But first, let's talk about the title sequence to the series:

It's adorable, and makes me want a Murderbot action figure. However, I'm not sure I get what they're going for with it. But it doesn't take anything away from the show, so I'll allow it.

Sat down to watch the first episode with Mrs. Beebo last night, then sneaked off to watch the second episode while she was watching baseball.

Overall, I really liked it. I thought the casting was solid, with a few standouts (Gurathin & Mensah). I've never been fully onboard with the decision to cast Alexander Skarsgard in the lead role, but he did well enough to not disrupt my enjoyment of the story. Several of the original Preservation Alliance characters were dropped, which was a good decision; it was hard enough keeping track of them in the book. Production values were actually better than I expected.

I have a few quibbles here and there, but that's par for the course with any adaptation. So far they've adhered to the spirit of the books in most areas that I care about. The transition from Murderbot's first person perspective -- as an unreliable narrator -- to a more general view was necessary for the medium, but it's the most fraught for dedicated fans of the books. Martha Wells left a lot of room for people to fill in the blanks of the world around it that Murderbot didn't describe (because it didn't care).

The grim, bitter cynicism of Murderbot's inner dialogue is not pervasive in the show's tone, which is probably (for me) the biggest departure from the books. It's a creative decision on just how much of that to emphasize and how to do so. I personally would have liked more of it to come through in Skarsgard's voice-overs, but it's still in the range of differences I'm willing to accept. The Preservation team was a bit goofier at times than I imagined, but there were undercurrents of that cultural tone in the books, so it's not out of left field.

I'll definitely keep watching.

I watched both, too. Didn’t looove it, but still enjoyed it. I also wasn’t too sure about Skarsgard being cast, but as Beebo says, he’s doing a good job. Maybe it’s only because he differs in how I imagined Murderbot (hairless and with less facial expression). I imagined them more as a cyborg.

I think we’re seeing Murderbot’s interpretation of everyone, which is how it’s supposed to be, just as in the book. Humans are silly, not too bright. When I was reading the books, though, I also saw them as scientists, capable and smart. I could also imagine their own points of view. That’s what made it funny to me, the contrast of the serious manner of the crew, and Murderbot’s thoughts and judgments of their ways. They weren’t actively goofy, it was Murderbot’s biting commentary that made them so. I’m not sure if that makes sense.

Maybe that’s what I feel is missing, my own interpretations, ha ha.

Having said that, I love how the cast just looks “normal”, not a bunch of twenty something models. The visuals/sets are great, very much how I imagined it all. It’s fun to see snippets of Sanctuary Moon, and yes, the intro is cool and I want an action figure, too.

Episode 4...*chef's kiss*

"It was completely hypnotized by my beautiful voice."

The idea of having SecUnit hallucinate itself onto Sanctuary Moon while the override module takes hold was brilliant!

Enjoyed that episode. Laughed out loud a few times.
Just wish they were longer then 22-23 minutes. At least there are ten. 🤖

I guess that's the planetary version of the Kzinti lesson.
