If you’ve ever thought, “I would like my digital avatar to wear poorly rendered designer clothing,” I have excellent news for you.

Meta is launching an online store where Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger users can purchase digital clothing for their avatar. The first brands on the store are Prada, Balenciaga, and Thom Browne, and clothes include a motocross outfit, a logo hoodie, and suits.

Great, an online marketplace (hic!) to shop for hip and fashionable clothing to put on your avatar. Now, where the fuck is your avatar?

I already have a regular jog to use for an avatar so I passed.

The problem I've seen is that to do the custom avatars for facebook, you have to use a phone.

All I can think is that its easier to harvest all the information from phones with an app, instead of on a PC [also suspect that's why you used to? need a phone to even use instagram to post images.

By the way, this is a cool idea, and I'm sure many users of social networks will like it. So far, I've only seen avatars on Facebook and stickers on Instagram, but I think meta will do more.

So I was actually using Gravatars recently for an argument.

I think the internet's use of 2D avatars shows the desire path for 3D avatars. And where are we currently with 2D avatars?

Everyone has a .png that sits on their harddrive, and they upload it manually to any service that allows them to have a custom one. They all support the same exact format, if you've got a square image in any of the common image formats, it works on any service unless it's super picky about resolution, but for the most part, the same file works everywhere.

I think that's shows the way forward with 3D avatars. No blockchains, no crazy new file transfer protocols, we just need a single file fromat for avatars that sits on your desktop and you can upload it to any 3D platform that allows custom avatars, and it just works.

My avatar currently exists in 7 VR platforms exactly as-is, and but I've had to handle and port 6 different ways. (Thankfully, 2 of them supported vrm files)

I think .vrm format is the most promising way forward for universal avatars.

But 2D avatars show people just want those universal avatars to sit on your desktop until uploaded to a service.

I don't think there's a demand for "metaversal avatars" that automatically get carried service to service. If there was, the Gravatars would be mainstream.
