...the US is hardly in any position to lead it right now.
:qft:
Personally, I would find it mortifying for the U.S. to make a public display of empty platitudes. We're fighting to keep some vestige of a democratic system in place, and what we have isn't working terribly well at solving our most pressing problems.

We might gain more credibility as a democratic leader of the free world if we swiftly and soundly prosecuted every corrupt member of the Trump Administration. We're obviously too divided for that, which just highlights our current shaky hold on these ideals.

This would be a good start, but there would be much more necessary than that. Weapons of mass destruction, killing drone commandos, Guantanamo bay, the list goes on and on...

There are two ways to lead: by example or to be feared and by power. America lead by fear and power in the past, not by example.

We're out of gas on both fronts now. The fear factor may still be there, but it's more the "Watch out for the loose cannon!" variety, because we're so unpredictable, lurching from one election to the next with an entirely different slate of players.

Thing is, the Center is actually the Left, because both parties are still right of Center.
What Biden is doing is countering Republican claims that he's a patsy of "socialist liberals" by claiming to be in the middle politically. And really, he is. He hasn't gone whole hog for progressive policies. I mean, he's more progressive than the far right conservatives, but so is my coffeemaker.

Oh, I know. Its just, the reality is..... and well, in earlier days I'd be somewhere in the middle politically, but now my views are considered super progressive. Sadly, thinking all people deserve the same basic rights is radical or something.

Yep, wanting to give people in need a hand up, and caring for our fellow human beings, are considered socialist - even communist - around here.

This is going to be known as the Repair Presidency.
It's this reality that finally persuaded me that Biden really was the best suited candidate for the presidency in 2020. The federal government has been so battered that the next term will be unable to do much more than reassemble the pieces. And without a majority in the Senate, not even that restoration may be possible. Biden has the long-term experience to know what needs to be done and who can do it. So far, his appointments have exceeded my expectations.

I mean... Ben is right that those things are mostly to help democrats win elections since more people voting will help democrats. ....but Ben seems to lack self awareness that it really says something about Republicans that they need voter suppression to be competitive.
If there were a republican-leaning territory, they'd be all for statehood. But D.C. voted 95% Democrat, and Puerto Rico is likely to lean that way too (I don't know much about their politics).

I don't know about their politics either but this article says it isn't clear cut.
