Another Year , Another Census
This Census was run between 31st December 2018 and 4th January 2019 and as before involved surveybot visits to every Mainland Region and a full scan of all parcels in each region. As with previous census, this includes the 5 Linden Home Continents and the old Teen grid mainland as well as traditional mainland. There were 16 regions which were closed to public access but these were all hand surveyed from bordering regions, this figure is up on Jan 2018 where 12 regions were hand surveyed.
For reference the last published Census was carried out in Jan 2018 and was reported on SLU - I will be hosting the older census on Gridsurvy in the near future
Overview
In January 2019 Mainland consists of 6801 regions, (there are about another 894 Linden Owned regions which are not included in the Census - mainly Help Islands, Linden Realms but also the new SSP regions which will probably be counted as Mainland once they go live ). This is number of region is down by 5 on Jan 2018 . There has been no addition to the Mainland since 2016 when the Horizon regions were attached to Zindra (the Adult mainland). The following chart shows how the number of Mainland regions has changed over the past 16 published Census.
The overall number of parcels is 5.7% up since Jan 2018 and the total number of Owners fell by 6.2% , Individual Owners were up by 4.6% and the total number of land holding groups rose by 14.2% from Jan 2018.
Linden Lab now owns less of Mainland than last time (-6.5%) and current abandoned land figures are down form last years peak with 18.4% to 19.0% of mainland abandoned. In Jan 2018 the figure was 22.2% to 22.8%.
Overall the total number of owners has increased and land is begining to be taken up again with abandoned land decreasing . Last year we saw a slowing down in land abandonnment compared with the previous year. Linden Lab share of Mainland is no lobger increasing and has dropped from 58% to 54% of all mainland.
Overview of Parcels
The total number of individual parcels in Jan 2019 is 132377 up from 125010 in Jan 2018 and these parcels are owned by 60388 unique owners, up by 2144 since Jan 2018 . The average parcel has a Mean area of 3,369Sqm (Median 512Sqm) and is 43.9% full , this represents a small decrease in size since the last published census . 31056 of these parcels are directly owned by Linden Lab . The Mean size of the remaining parcels was 2,004sqm (Median=512Sqm) and are 54.1% full. 32% of parcels are group owned, 38% for Non-Linden parcels, this again is more or less unchanged on both figures since the last published census.
Overview of Owners
Mainland is now owned by 60388 unique owners, 49084 individual accounts and 11254 groups, an increase of 2144 individuals and 1397 groups since Jan 2018 , The increase since Jan 2018 in individual owners is about 4.6% (Last year this figure was -0.2%) . Each Non-Linden owner has holdings with a mean area of 3366.5Sqm - up by 82sqm on Jan 2018 (Median is unchanged at 512Sqm) and on average held in 1.67 different parcels, a tiny increase from Jan 2018 figure of 1.66.
Total ownership is up by 6.2% on Jan 2018 which was an overall decline (0.3%) on the previous Jan 2017 figures. We are seeing a significant increase in owners in the past 12 months than in the previous 12.
The top 2 owners by area are still Linden Accounts , with the Linden Blakes Sea in 5th place. The top 2 Non-Linden owners have both decreased their holdings. Governor Linden holdings have decreased from 51.2% (Jan 2018) to 47.5% today, LDPW holdings remained at 6.0% .In Previous Census I reported owners with over 1,000,000Sqm which covered 8 Non-Linden accounts (all group held) . Since Jan 2018 the number of non-Linden accounts with at least this much land is still 8 .
Here are the holdings of all owners with more that 1,000,000Sqm
Total significant Linden holdings come to 242,604,176Sqm 54.4% of the total, down since Jan 2018 by 16,884,480Sqm and a share decrease of 4.2% . Overall Linden Holdings increased by 2.6% by area This represents an decrease of 257.6 full regions,
Non Linden holdings come to 203,106,160Sqm down by 16,884,480Sqm , representing a 8.9% rise since Jan 2017 - This also equates to 258.6 full regions worth
The top 22 Non-Linden owners own 13.1% of all Non-Linden Mainland - a lower share than Jan 2017 (15.3%). The Top 6 own 8.1% (9.5%).
Using same tier assumptions as in previous Census Total Monthly Mainland Tier but apply the newer tier rates and rules, comes to US$630,786 , down on the Jan 2018 rate by US$61,479 or 8.9%.
Mean Tier is US$10.46, Median is still US$0 and 46,125 landowners (76%) pay no tier above their premium subscription, 3997 up on Jan 2018. In general its slighlty more residents , the majority (76%) of owners directly owning 1024sqm or less. Generally owners are owning a little more , though top land holders seem to be cutting back .
Known protected land is currently 157,809,984Sqm (65.0% of all Linden owned), up since last census from 60.7%, this includes empty Linden Home plots. Known Abandoned land is now 82,061,664Sqm (33.8%) down by 16.9% since Jan 2018 ,and a decrease of 254.5 Regions worth . Blank and other unknown descriptions comes to 2,732,528Sqm (1.1%) down from Jan 2018 (by 16.5%)
So abandoned land is somewhere between 82,061,664Sqm and 84,794,192Sqm or 18.4% to 19.0% of all Mainland - an equivalent of 1252 to 1294 full regions.
9 years ago when I ran the very first Mainland Census in November 2009 abandoned land was 3.5% to 5.0% (Mainland Census completed ). The change in abandoned land since Dec 2010 is as follows:
Overview of Regions
The current 6801 Mainland Regions have a mean of 11.9 unique owners per region holding land in them (0.8 more than seen in Jan 2019) , the Median is 8 owners ( up 2 from last census) . The mean number of parcels per region is 19.5 and 90.4% have at least one Linden owned Parcel. 1407 (20.7%) are completely owned by Linden Lab accounts, down by 16 regions since last census.
The busiest regions contains 56 different owners (there are 2 of these, all Linden Home Regions). The average region uses 34.9% of it's Prim Allowance (in Jan 2016 it was 30.1%) .
Overview of Linden Homes
The total number of Linden Home regions remained unchanged since the last census at 1163 (17.1% of Mainland) . In total there are currently 42733 Linden Home Plots which is also unchanged since last census. Of these 35609 are occupied,(83.3%) This is a fall of 1133 owners since Jan 2017 (a drop of 3.1%).
Overview of Land for Sale
Currently 9,817,616Sqm is marked for sale (including Auction). This represents 2.0% of Mainland and is a slight increase on Jan 2018.
Among Non-Linden owned land 9,680,464Sqm is for sale .

As we've seen with Private Estates 2018 looks like a small revival for Mainland . Ownership is up (though Linden Home Ownership is down) and Owners are holding more land than before (Not surprising with the changes in Tier and Free Land Allowances) Larger land holders have tended to decrease their holdings but there has been a lot more active owners at the lower end. Abandoned land has signficantly decreased and there has been some increase in Protected Linden land.
