Wow! I'd seen The Atlantic was running this series of articles by E. Jean Carroll, the woman against whose libel suit Bill Barr is defending Trump, but I've only just got round to reading them.

In her 2019 memoir, What Do We Need Men For?, E. Jean Carroll accused Donald Trump of rape, in a Bergdorf’s dressing room in the mid-1990s. After the president denied ever meeting her and dismissed her story as a Democratic plot, she sued him for defamation. Carroll was not, of course, the first woman to say that Trump had sexually harassed or assaulted her, but unlike so many other powerful men, the president has remained unscathed by the #MeToo reckoning. So in the run-up to the November 3 election, Carroll is interviewing other women who alleged that Trump suddenly and without consent “moved on” them, to cite his locution in the Access Hollywood tape. “I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them, it’s like a magnet ... And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy.”

Carroll’s lawsuit took a dramatic turn this week, when the Justice Department intervened in an attempt to take over the president’s defense, asserting that Trump was acting in his official capacity when he claimed not to know Carroll. Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson denied all of the women’s allegations, calling them “decades-old false statements” that had been “thoroughly litigated in the last election and rejected by the American people.

Washington’s NFL team, until recently known as the Redskins, is seeking a less insensitive name, one appropriate for the nation’s capital. The name should be: the Continuing Resolutions.
The eight syllables are clunky, but so is the federal government, which finds a fundamental task of governing — passing a budget — too arduous to do more than intermittently. Such heavy legislative lifting is generally too much for an election year. Or a year before an election year. And those are the only kinds of years there are.

The Senate Appropriations Committee has passed none of this fiscal year’s 12 funding bills, so, to prevent the unseemliness of a government shutdown as Election Day approaches and as the pandemic death toll approaches 200,000, a continuing resolution will probably be passed by Oct. 1, the beginning of the next fiscal year. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin suggests a CR enabling the government to keep on keeping on with things as they are “through the beginning of December.” Then there probably will be another CR, to get the country to the next one.

Yes, but I think the point is that the small minority of gun owners who are enthusiastic about a having a civil war, and many of whom form themselves into armed militias, are also the sort of people who were worried that Obama and Biden would confiscate their arsenals prior to shipping them off to FEMA-run concentration camps, and are grateful to Trump for stopping them.
