By the way today is the 300th birthday of Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen. Münchhausen was old German nobility and a notorious liar, often telling outrageous stories. "You are lying like Münchhausen" is a standard idiom in Germany for somebody who is telling stories nobody really can believe.

Later a book based on his real life persona was created which contained some of his alleged stories. So to speak an ancestor of Trump, but contrary to him still popular and beloved in Europe.

I'm going to spout a conspiracy theory right now, and its my own. A year ago this would have been unthinkable. Now I think it is one conceivable option for what Trump and Barr see as their steps to not just avoiding jail (for Trump), but to holding onto power Putin-style. I'm not saying this is going to happen. What I am saying is that something like this or just as horrible seems possible in these times.

1. Barr announces investigation of the Russia Investigation - insinuating that the investigation itself was a crime.
2. Ukraine-gate, which may also be Iraq-gate but who has time to follow that?
3. Charges against Flynn are dropped despite guilty pleas and despite no one disputing that he did in fact lie to Pence and the FBI.
4. Trump starts projecting an imminent charge against Obama on vague "Obamagate" charges. He uses the word treason.

5. Barr announces charges against Obama and other officials, likely to include Joe Biden, Pelosi and Schiff.
6. Civil unrest breaks out (or I really hope it would?). Neo fascist and other white supremacist groups get violent and are in some cases, met with violence.

8. Trump & McConnell work together to declare an emergency postponement to upcoming elections, ignoring Constitutional mandates. There is no one left in a position to stop them who is not either 'under investigation' or actually under indictment. Covid rages through the states thanks to the policies mandated by the administration early on. There's no one able to respond in the way they should.
9. The US as a Democracy is over.

Barr can announce that he's inducting the man in the moon, it doesn't mean that he can do it. The Attorney General us but the be-all and end-all of the law. Oh, God, I'm not rooting for any of this to happen. I'm just pointing out the possibilities of just how deeply the Republicans will plumb the depths of sliminess to keep their man (and themselves) in power. The scary part is, the scenario I portrayed is well within their wheelhouse.
