Is it just me or has SL's performance dropped significantly?

I have noticed in the past few weeks that SL has been performing worse and worse - specifically rendering of textures and avatars. It sometimes takes a ridiculous amount of time for stuff to fully render. I was visiting a friend last night and she took almost 5 minutes to fully render for me, and several of the textures in her house did the same thing. It is not any one place - it has been happening a lot lately for me. It seems to have worsened after the recent maintenance. Anyone else seeing this? I have heard friends that are experiencing the same thing. Nothing has changed on my end.

Second Life is was, and shall always be a buggy POS. The bugs seem to come and go and do hit people differently. I do think Linden Labs is often patching bugs and not telling anyone and obviously creating new ones too.

For me, SL has been reasonably swift lately (I have a beast of a PC and a fast internet connection) but I have been having some issues recently where I teleport to a new place on a sim and tons of objects just don't load at all. I usually have to relog in place to fix the issue. It's not that it's slow, it's that it just "forgets" to load a ton of stuff that is around me. This issue is recent and hopefully disappears soon.

...so in summary, I don't have the exact issue you described, but have noticed other issues come and go.

I had pretty much the same experience about 2-3 weeks back, but this past weekend I didn't see much of a problem loading textures (other than normal lag).

This, 2 Weeks back and it was closer to what Cristiano has described, but not THAT bad. It's back to normal for me, so no major issues.

When was the last time you cycled your modem/router?

It's something easily forgotten to do on a regular basis.

and the delay does seem to time stuff out, as GoblinCampFollower noted, so that the textures never arrive. Zooming into an object will sometimes prompt a load, or reload, of surrounding textures. Also popping into the next sim and back will sometimes jolt downloads because sims are supposed to initiate textures of neighboring sims when cameras are close to the edge, I suppose, or something like that.

Well that sounds like a terrible change!
PBR is short for Physics Based Rendering, in laymans terms: real mirrors, amongst other things. In order for that to work as intended ALM has to be always enabled. This here is the official recommendation by LL in order what to do with less powerful computers then.

I am excited for PBR but also it may mean no logger logging in on my Laptop, just my desktop (Which like GoblinCampFollower, its a beast. A beasty beast.)

Hmmm... According to the FS wiki some textures are handled client side so...

NOTE: Some effects are in-world only; they cause things to change visually but are handled entirely by the client, thus do not create any network (or region) lag. These include: particles, texture animation, client-side rotation.
fs_lag_troubleshooting [Phoenix Firestorm Project - Wiki] (firestormviewer.org)

Check to see what might be running in the background. The usual process of elimination. Might be time to replace something. We had to replace our router and modem recently.

This worked btw... just zooming WAY out then back in reloaded stuff, thanks!

There is IMHO no official release date yet, but a project viewer available already. So I think a 3-12 month time frame is probably what we will do experience.

Length of time since last Viewer Update?

Infers that there has been some degree of server side changes to 'STUFF & THINGS' that the viewer has not caught up too.

We all know the way LL upgrades things: One step ahead - two backwards - maybe one or two steps ahead again and then they call it a day and forget all about it.
It seems to me, the money still comes pretty easy and plenty their way, so why go that occasional extra mile?

SL performance deteriorated for me some time ago. In recent years avatars have always taken ages to rez in busy places but now the surroundings are taking longer to rez too. Changing the graphics settings makes little difference, except in the case of reducing draw distance. I have a good PC and fast internet connection.

Editing appearance usually takes a long time because you have to wait for all the pairs of images of distorted parts of your body to load before you can change a slider. Occasionally they load instantly, but that's rare. Is there a way of disabling those images on the LL standard viewer, I wonder?
