To beat Trump, we need to know why Americans keep voting for him. Psychologists may have the answer

Summary: Values cluster around either "intrinsic" or "extrinsic" poles according to some psychogists. Those with a strong set of intrinsic values are inclined towards empathy, intimacy and self-acceptance. They tend to be open to challenge and change, interested in universal rights and equality, and protective of other people and the living world. People at the extrinsic end are more attracted to prestige, status, image, fame, power and wealth. They are strongly motivated by the prospect of individual reward and praise. They are more likely to objectify and exploit other people, to behave rudely and aggressively and to dismiss social and environmental impacts.

Values are shaped by the cues and responses we receive from other people and the prevailing mores of our society. If people live under a cruel and grasping political system, they tend to normalise and internalise it, while those who live in a country in which no one becomes destitute, in which social norms are characterised by kindness, empathy, community and freedom from want and fear, their values are likely to shift towards the intrinsic end. This process is known as policy feedback, or the “values ratchet”.

Ever since Reagan, US politics has become fertile soil for extrinsic values. We talk about society’s rightward journey. We talk about polarization and division. We talk about isolation and the mental health crisis. But what underlies these trends is a shift in values. This is the cause of many of our dysfunctions; the rest are symptoms.

So, now it's tax evasion!! :kittyball:

Trumps Throw Tantrum Over Court Monitor’s Financial Bombshell

Now that the retired federal judge babysitting the Trump Organization has uncovered potential tax fraud at the company, the Trumps responded over the weekend by tasking their own accountant as a monitor that monitors the court monitor.

In an indignant court filing Monday morning, a lawyer for the Trumps for the first time launched an all-out attack on Judge Barbara S. Jones—calling her latest report on the family company an absolute lie, a cheap attempt to justify her government-mandated job, and a last-minute ploy to bolster the New York Attorney General’s bank fraud case that just wrapped up.

“Further oversight is unwarranted and will only unjustly enrich the monitor as she engages in some ‘Javert’ like quest,” he wrote, making a reference to the fictional French law enforcement officer in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, who’s defined by his obsessive pursuit and lack of empathy.

The Trumps also complained about the $2.6 million they’ve had to pay Jones to do her job, dismissing her findings wholesale.

It's the same judge Trump and his lawyers wanted to bring in as a witness for the defense:
Monday afternoon, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled to preclude testimony from the independent monitor appointed in the case, Judge Barbara Jones, and a member of her staff, denying a Trump defense request to call them in the case. Trump’s attorneys had indicated they intend to call Jones and a lawyer on her staff to testify about her findings and the Trump Org.’s cooperation since Jones was appointed as monitor last fall. Engoron said the request is untimely and inappropriate because Jones and her staff are “arms of the court and you cannot question the court in this manner.”

Also, she's highly sought-after. So she has no particular need for this specific job. If she hadn't been appointed as Trump's babysitter, she would have earned those $2.6 million elsewhere.

To all devoted MAGA patriots aboard the Trump Train:

America’s economy appears to have gone woke and is now fully supporting the reelection of Crooked Joe Biden. I’m not sure how this happened, but no matter how much we say the economy is terrible, it keeps unpatriotically refusing to be terrible, posing a direct threat to PRESIDENT Donald J. Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
The good stuff is below the fold.

Why Donald Trump’s mysterious $48 million loan matters (Lisa Rubin, MSNBC)

In her most recent report, as many have noted, she not only identified a variety of irregularities but also flagged something potentially more significant: the absence of any loan agreement memorializing what she understood to be a $48 million loan to Trump from Chicago Unit Acquisition, an entity affiliated with his Chicago building. That loan, which reportedly was made in 2012, seems to have been repeatedly included among Trump’s liabilities in his U.S. Office of Government Ethics-required financial disclosures in 2018, 2019, 2020 and just days before leaving office in 2021. Yet in her letter, Jones noted that in her recent discussions with the Trump Organization, the company “indicated that it has determined that this loan never existed.”
