To us Germans, November 9th is that date when stuff happens.

Exactly 100 years ago on this day, the Weimar Republic was proclaimed, ending monarchy in Germany.

It's the 80th anniversary of the November pogroms. The date was picked by the Nazis because of the Beer Hall putsch, which ended on Nov 9th 1923, and because it's Martin Luther's birthday.

Then, 29 years ago on this day, the Berlin Wall came down, ending the Cold War.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about this day, but it seems like a good idea to stay inside and try to avoid going outside, especially when you're in Berlin.

What would you make of it?

Germany does seem to have an interesting relationship with the calendar. It was 100 years nearly to the day between the 1848 revolutions and Stunde Null (Zero Hour, the birth of the German Federal Republic).

Interesting side note: A large number of 1848 German revolutionaries emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Some of the best officers in the Union army during the Civil War were Germans who fled to America after the 1848 revolutions.
