A flying car is just a plane without wings. And a jetpack would likely stick me in a tree somewhere and singe my clothing.

But an Airbike? Woof!



I'm just not sure it's real. Or will ever exist at a cost I can afford in my lifetime. But, I want to believe...

I could settle for a Jetson One, which I'd describe as a personal drone. But it's currently priced well in excess of 100 grand (USD). I'm not made of that kind of disposable income.

There's also the Hoverbike from Hoversurf. But I've been hearing about this one since the 2019 CES trade show. +6 years is too long a wait, Hoverstay.

I'm game, but full disclosure, I'm so clumsy that I fall off a regular bike, let alone, what would happen to me if I fell off an air bike! 😧 Also, how come they never showed it landing? What's a landing like? 🤕

I am absolutely certain that it lands. It lands after every flight. You can't be more certain than that. 💣

I knew a dude in college who planned to live on a farm, but work in a city and use one of those personal gyrocopters to commute every day.

He was also super into Linux and open source and tech.

He was also super into Linux and open source and tech.
Commuting with a gyroplane would be very tricky, because unlike an actual helicopter a gyro can't hover, so it can't go just anywhere it wants. Under certain conditions you can land with only a few feet of rollout, but taking off is a different story, you really need a whole actual runway, at least as much runway as a light airplane.

(That is a Fairey Rotodyne prototype -- one of many interesting turns the British aviation industry took after WWII. Because the rotor could be driven by the jet engines at its tips, it could take off and land vertically. After takeoff, it transitioned to being a gyrocopter. It flew about 350 (!) test flights, all without serious incident, but was done in by noise issues -- that big rotor with the jets on the ends was, it seems, hella loud -- weight/capacity concerns, and by politics.)
