The rotted husk of a human being known as Kellyanne Conway oozed out onto one of the cable shows today and among other things, claimed that Antifa stands for anti-first amendment. After I rolled my eyes, it got me to thinking of better names for Antifa. My favorite that I came up with, which could have nice blue hat branding, is MANA: Make America Naziless Again. Thoughts?

I'm sure Ms Cryptkeeper or someone else would find a way to twist whatever they came up with, lol.
And then try to get the various groups that style themselves as Antifa to all adopt whatever the new name was? Yeah, good luck with that.

I just always use "antifascist". I think somebody here in this forum maybe suggested making that a thing. Alt-righters use "antifa" all the time; whenever non-Nazis refer to antifascists we should just say "antifascist".

This has the benefit of clarity.

Also a vegan banana milkshake sounds good right now.

Kellyanne Conway is unscrupulous and evil, she's not dumb. The likelihood that she genuinely doesn't know what Antifa is short for is a number approaching zero.

In short, she and people of her ilk, are liars. Antifascist Action changing their name to avoid her deliberate attempts to muddy its meaning serves no purpose. They'll just use the rebranding as "proof" of having something to hide and move on to new smear tactics.

Rebranding won't help; aside the term has not been coined in America, but way back in the 1930s in the Weimar Republic.

The thing is that while major parts of the Antifa are peaceful, some are not - and are being known for attacking right wing extremists on street. The violent members are often using the black bloc tactic.

Yes and no. The contraction, Antifa is a loan term from the Weimar era, true. The original Antifaschiste Aktion being a KPD front in 1931/32 The modern movement in the USA however, really has its roots in the UK in the mid-80s, when it sprang up in opposition to the growing white power influence amongst skinheads, pretty much as the UK analogue of SHARPS in the USA.

Modern US Antifas use the terminology and the logo of their european forebears, but their politics are their own thing.

I can’t speak to conditions in other places, but in the US many of the police are fascists themselves. It’s understandable that protestors would want to keep their faces off cameras, and be prepared, in a defensive way, for escalation and right-wing violence.

Remember our antifascists are showing up without lethal weapons while the Proud Boys and other fascists are showing up with military grade firearms and have police escorts.

By and large, the antifascists are trying to avoid violence. But we can’t let fascists come in from out of state and walk around in the downtowns of Blue cities dressed like paramilitary and carrying open firearms. This only amplifies the slide to a police state.

The problem is that since Trump it is being okay to be a sexist, rapist, white supremacist, narcissist, fascist, extremist, insecure, lying, hate seeding dickhead, which cries "You've hurt my feelings" every time somebody comes around with good arguments. The bigger problem is though is that the environment in which a dickhead like Trump can thrive already was there.

But since Trump is in the office this encouraged the filth to finally come out of the water into broad daylight, and oh boy, what a hideous view it makes!

The only thing which is good about Trump is that he enabled us to finally see the real size of the swamp he belongs to, so that people can react to it.

Trump is just a figurehead of an extreme right that’s been around for a long time. But until they gained power in the Republican Party, most sensible people considered them a fringe that could be ignored.

The racism and religiosity have been part of right wing politics for a long time. But it’s the whole Republican Party that’s pushing it now, and if Trump died tomorrow of a heart attack, it wouldn’t slow them down a bit. Pence and McConnell would just carry on.

This is the kind of problem I’m trying to explain: Portland Police Found Right-Wing Protesters With a Cache of Long Guns Atop a Parking Garage. Why Didn’t the Mayor Know?

When I look at The 14 Characteristics of Fascism, by Lawrence Britt, Spring 2003 , it feels like a name is the least of our worries.

I agree with everything that Brenda Archer said about Trump being a figurehead and the Republican Party, but if we got rid of all of these things tomorrow, we would still be standing in the middle of fascism. It's seems almost pointless to be fighting scapegoats in the street when it's the entire system that's the problem.

If we're not really prepared to be honest about what fascism is, then it's pretty enabling faces will just breed ugly exploiting ones again.

It will keep repeating as long as a significant plurality of the population can be persuaded to accept fascist viewpoints.

Some of this is the lack of education in the right wing base we’ve talked about, and some of it is the Neo-Confederate religiosity we’ve talked about. I have always believed right leaning television programming is a large part of the problem, even before Fox. The combination of authority and a population unable to evaluate historical or scientific claims makes the owners of the TV programming the owners of uninformed voters.

This is a conversion machine for fascism among everyone who takes the TV as an authority figure. It is temporary, so the powers that be are trying to solidify a coup while they can. If they fail, they may try to destroy what they could not hold.

We not only have television now, we are also heading toward techno-fascism. Search engines which conveniently whittle down sources of information into prescribed selections. We're watching little boxes being put into homes that don't even bother with choices anymore. They're perfectly willing to just give us all the answers without even pretending there's some kind of test.

Getting people to a point where they can evaluate information and stop leaning on popular authority figures is the most political thing there is.
