Hm. Legacy body uses Media on a Prim for their HUD, but there's no GDPR compliance statement anywhere... RedZone, anyone?

Legacy is definitely talking to some external server, I've had the HUD on a body I use sometimes scream and die on me at least once when their webserver crapped out for a few hours. I'm trying to decide if I want to continue using the body at all in response to some of the shit I've seen out of them lately.

Which is a shame, I rather like the Perky and don't like some of the geometry of the Lara. But I was building a specific look that I'm not sure I can pull off with another body.

EDIT: I suppose at the end of the day, not using a body I purchased because of some kind of ethical statement is kind of foolish. Just because I think the creators are wrong headed doesn't mean the product is garbage. It could be handled a lot better, though.

So here's some comedy. It's come out that Legacy has the ability to brick their mesh bodies based on user UUID.
Also, your content will become worthless when their servers go down. As happened to anyone who "bought" music using Microsoft "Plays For Sure" technology.

Yes, it will also become worthless if LL's servers go down, but it's more likely some random vendor in SL will go casters-up.

they are smart enough to go through HTTPS.
Are they really that smart though? Because after all this encryption, the prim is going to decode the texture key and send a request out to LL's asset server which will send you back the texture keys in plaintext. Which you will then cache, in plaintext.

All this DRM for nothing.

This is the same company that uses threats of bricking the AVs of anyone who is using an 'unathorized' devkit, whether it was made using their assets or not, as an opening line in negotiations.

And starts singing a different tune when they find out the person they're threatening has a lawyer on retainer.

Got a link on that?
Someone on LeLutka's Discord server has been talking up Legacy (and putting down Maitreya) to such a degree that it's getting annoying.
I mean, I tried on Legacy when I saw so many people starting to like it. It's nice enough, but I don't think it's miles above the rest to warrant such superlatives, and of course there's the whole TMP/The Shops thing.

As someone who uses a Legacy body for one of their avatars: Yes. If your body cannot phone home to Legacy's servers the HUD dies, and you cannot make any changes to your body. No custom alpha cuts. No manual foot state changes. No manual hand state changes. No adjustments to your material layers. No changes to your skins, other than through BoM.

I wonder what the server costs are like and what the drama will be like if the operator one day decides to go out HippoVend style. 🍿

I love Legacy's shape - it's what I've wanted for years. But oh my deity-of-your-choice I HATE THAT DAMNED HUD. I hate that it phones home, I hate that it uses media-on-a-prim, I hate that it slows to a crawl in anything other than a fast sim, and I hate that the alpha cuts bug out after swapping outfits too many times (forcing a relog or detach/reattach of hud and body). When it comes to huds, Maitreya and LeLutka are the best, hands down.

Also, Legacy, please make the applier layers separate attachments like Maitreya did so we can cut down on rendering complexity, plz k thx.

When I tried the demo, the HUD wouldn't even load until I TPed to a sandbox. It kept working or I TPed back, but I didn't trust it to keep doing so. Did not inspire confidence.

if still in doubt try the body in a 3000m height skybox and watch the gaps forming between alpha segments

is there a huge amount of money that is only made by making things no mod? It sounds like it would be fairly easy to stomp competition by making similar products with +mod enabled.

The furries have had this thing down for decades now. I don’t think there’s a single attachment, accessory, or gadget I have on any of my avatars that is no mod. Scripts maybe, but not the object. Crazy concept to me.

I nuke all the scripts and recode things myself to all work together across different creator’s content. I de-link parts of meshes and fuse them with others so they can be more optimized. I tweek things way too much to tolerate anything no mod.

I’m suprised nothing has caught on and no mod is so prevalent once you go to more mainstream SL content

If you're in a no-script zone scripts won't run on attach until you leave the zone. They keep running when you return because they attach to a control.

Fly up 150 meters and that'll do it.

Adeon - I bought a plane and it was no-mod and that ticked me off enough to learn scripting vehicles and spend a year and a half on and off to build my own.

I sell it mod.

To fit anything to a furry avatar it must be mod, this is why furries are some of the best modders on the grid, it's by necessity.

As for availability of things in mod, there's an Event for that now. They also have a Discord:

Things usually wind up being made No Mod by people justifying a combination of money making and trying to eliminate stupid customer support complaints. Not always on that order. There's also a certain amount of lazy code being hidden, several hair companies have gone NoMod because it turned out they reused code across hair and someone figured out the syntax to control textures.

Honestly, when I hear people talking about trying to eliminate customer complaints really I just tend to lump it into 'My HUD code is shit and it would eat into my entire business model if people figured out how to load in their own scripts.' But every now and then you MIGHT run into someone who doesn't make backups and can't figure out how to get a redelivery.

Back when I would ask vendors about why their stuff was no-mod they would blather on about copybots.
