Google Doodle celebrates the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web

Do you still remember the first web page you saw? For me, it was through an online service called Prodigy, and it was a site called Web Museum, where you could see pictures of paintings in The Louvre. My mind was blown, and after that I became obsessed with the web and ended up making a career out of it.

Oh my God, I remember WebMuseum! I got on the Web really early, back in 1992 when I first started working at my university. In fact, in 1994 I helped set up my university's first official web server. (Yes, I am old as dirt.)

I think my first pre-web thing was through some dial up thing in OS/2 that gave me access to gopher sites. Not as impressive as the web, but still pretty cool.

Gopher and Usenet were both pretty cool for their time. The first www page I saw was the University of Kentucky's homepage while participating in an onsite workshop learning to build Linux servers/routers/firewalls that would share T1 connections in our campus labs. That was in 92. Five years later I was a Net Admin terminating copper and fiber cables; installing, programming, and managing Linux and AIX boxes; and converging all communication and data functions onto the campus network having never taken a single networking course. Can not imagine diving into IT today knowing what is taught rather than experiencing it all from the ground up. One shall retire from the field in 2022 and become a full time musician and consumer of nachos.

The first browser I used was NCSA Mosaic. I don't remember the first website I saw, but I do remember using services like Archie and Gopher *before* the Web. I think I had a 14.4K modem and one of the pizza-boxish shaped Macs (II vi I think). Before that we had Usenet on our work computers. I would dial in from home on a 1200 bps modem with a Commodore Amiga. Before *that* (about 1980) I was using an ASR-33 Teletype machine to connect to the Univerity computers at a glorious 70 bits per second. It had a continuous roll of paper and a type cylinder, and printed mechanically. You've probably seen them in old movies, they were a staple of newspaper office background noise. The University computers, in turn, talked to other computers via telephone and the Arpanet, which preceded the public Internet. I've been online a *long* time.

Once in a great while I used FTP to get files, but it has been years since I last did that.

First websites memories: The Doll Palace in 2000 and the USSRs website from 91 in the same year. I feel like hordes of Millenial girls plying on The Doll Palace are the reason why early 2000s/late 90s fashions have become trendy again in some circles.

The Compuserve homepage. Somehow I found my way into a chat room and was foolish enough to use my email name minus the compuserve part. I immediately started receiving porn emails, lol and no, the chatroom was not one of those, just an ordinary one. I believe that was the first and last time I visited chat rooms.

My mind was blown by the internet. I don't remember specific first pages, other than remembering being fascinated with anything and everything to do with encyclopedias or information (visited Encylopedia Brittanica a lot) and the power of search engines (Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves).

I still, out of habit, sometimes type out entire http://www.the address.
