Yeah, asexual is still of or related to sexuality. Like atheism is technically a theistic position. The thing rejected or lacking is an operative part of the term and fundamental to understanding what it means.Wouldn't the S in GSM already cover asexuality? It is, after all, a sexual identity or orientation (being "none, thank you"), which makes them a sexual minority. Kinda like how atheism may not be a religion but it is a religious persuasion or opinion...as in, "an opinion on the topic of religion".
Hence the need to reclaim it."Queer" has kinda one problem, though. As a straight cis male who likes to think of himself as an ally, I can't - or at least really shouldn't - use that word to describe non-straight people, because coming from someone like me it IS still a slur. Like how white people shouldn't ever be calling black people the n-word, even when "joking" with black friends who say they're okay with it. Same concept. So "the Q-word" is fine for people it describes to use for themselves, but people like me still need a term we can use when talking with and about them.
Ah, sorry, missed your's before. Yes, it is an orientation, but unlike the other two it is much more meaningless unless you define your romantic orientation as well (which is usually the same as your sexual orientation for those options). Fox example, I am an asexual but am also panromantic.Wouldn't the S in GSM already cover asexuality? Is it possible to reclaim it for the purposes of a group identifier? The n word has been someone reclaimed but it will never be used in the way you are suggesting queer would be.Hence the need to reclaim it.
FIFYThose of us that remember USENET suggest alt.sex.*
The n word is a bad example. Think of oh, yankee, it is hard to think of anyone using it as a slur today. Well, there are some places that I am sure do but you would not find anyone north of the mason dixon line anywhere near them.Is it possible to reclaim it for the purposes of a group identifier?
