Why do I care anyway? Because opensource is a place to go if SL is ever shut down. And these constant repeats of amateur hour make me think our broader community is not going to be the one to do it.
There's always
Dreamgrid, which is open source and can be run on your desktop and fairly easy to set up. No need to rely on flakes at all.
The community is going to be hypergrid-based; not grid based. That's a strength (independence) and a weakness (social engineering, bad actors).
The part that's missing in all the talk about the GCG; which has been posted on the GCG facebook, is that it's not just DNS. Terry had set up GCG with the PioneerX control panel to manage regions, etc with. It was tied into the version of opensim that GCG used.
Roddie has contacted PioneerX and hired someone to add that functionality to GCG; that's part of where the money is going; development and replacement of things that Terry ripped out.
Commercial opensim is ameteur hour, though. Always will be. I join grids and buy regions, but that's to be a part of their community and support them. I'm pleasantly surprised when I encounter professionalism, and not phased when I run into the rinky-dink factor.
But for commercial opensim the professionalism ship sailed...christ...back in the "Jumping in inworldz" days? Before? It's not even a thing, hasn't been, won't be.
I'm not GCG's PR girl, so I'm not going to post the blow-by-blow in this thread. I'd recommend that anyone who really cares go over and follow their
facebook. Bear in mind posts come and go though; so if you see something you care about,
gyazo that shit.
As far as the end of second life goes -it's a valid concern; nothing enterprise level is going to replace it when SL crashes and burns. leastwise nothting based on the SL protocol.
You have to remember that most tech companies go through a patent trolling litigation phase when they are on their way out; that would include LL.
In that eventually, the major Opensim players more likely than not would be taken to court -right or (likely) wrong.
But no one on god's green earth can stop you from spinning up your own grid -I have for 9 years now. So I wouldn't look for professionally handled anything out of opensim land -or major concurrency numbers.
I'd recommend instead setting up something smaller and personal (and possibly based on Dreamgrid).
