Fuck, you summoned them. Prok is raging against PBR and gamer tech bros.
I thought I used code to smudge my trail. As a charter member of the elite tech intelligentsia, I'm used to the lunatic rantings of fringe troglodytes.

(How was that?)

Much like Lauren Boebert giving a hand job in a theater, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice....except they pop up and grumble about techiwiki bros ruining SL with their gamification of pbrs.

As far as charter member status, I am the C in FIC baby.

Prok can die in nuclear fire, he ruined so much good stuff by ranting loudly at LL so they backed off on fixing region crossings and implementing llTeleportAgent and so much else that's never going to get cleaned up.

So we have now entered into the "ZOMG THE SKY IS FALLING" phase on the SL forums now that PBR has gone live in Firestorm. Also, someone referred to another poster as "it" multiple times and I got called a white knight because i called them out for it. I reported it and they did at least clean it up, hopefully the asshole got a warning.
The amount of fear about PBR has made me realize that a LOT of the vocal SL userbase apparently try to run SL on a Potato.

And not like, "a metaphorical bad PC," like, an actual Potato.

I have last year’s beefy machine and have found performance to be erratic with all the toys turned on. So I turned off mirrors and I think maybe people are putting mirrors everywhere until the novelty wears off. I’ll turn them back on when I want to use one or someone wants me to see something.

Unfortunately, PBR apparently only renders one mirror at a time.

One person in that thread said that they were running an i9, and it was fucked. If an i9 is fucked then my lowly i3 from *checks notes* 2022 doesn't stand a chance.

The problem with FS and PBR, or even simply PBR at this point is that it's too buggy and hasn't been tweaked for performance yet. It won't really be usable IMO for a version or two -after bugs have been squashed a bit and rough edges smoothed over.

And... there are tons of people who simply hate changes.
They simply don't like fiddling around with parameters and sliders. They wake up in the new PBR viewer and think: "F*ck, the water looks different, my avatar looks pale, it is dark inside the house..." So they don't consider it an improvement from the beginning.
"The new viewer broke my Second Life", is an obvious reaction.

Well you can run SL on a potato: just use the Radegast client.

Jokes aside, the problem with PBR is that in Firestorm it came rushed out. The bigger, basic problem is how expensive the current generation of gaming GPUs are nowadays and the 2 generations before as well. And with the tons of money Nvidia is making with AI, it will not become cheaper anytime soon. Gaming for Nvidia is now just a niche market they can completely ignore.

So gaming GPUs are expensive, and will stay that way. Because: monopoly. The best bang for the buck at the moment is Intel, but they still have some way to go.

And as long as for getting a current gaming GPU you've got to sell a kidney and half of your soul, people will more stick with their current stuff. Or buy a console.

This is a problem for LL, and becoming more and more a problem for the gaming industry on PC in general, because they are now pushing out all these next gen UE5 games which really put a toll on the GPU, so need a beefy one. But many people refuse to get one due to high prices. So if lots of PCs are too underpowered for these juicy games this means then less sales obviously.

Or I’ll make an avatar wearing 100 mirrors and walk through a club and see how many sessions I can crash. Every sequin on a dress should be a mirror, right?
I don't know about that, but thankfully at last we can put lots of 2048dpi textures into all the jewellery to make them look even more super good. That's a good thing yeah?

I am on an i9 and have not had any issues. My performance went up, not down.

I don't remembery PC specs off the top of my head but even with everything maxed out and DOF on the latest Firestorm at SL21B, I did not really see any problems.

My PC is from like 2021. But it does have a 3070 card, so maybe that helps.

I am not saying it doesn't happen, but it really feels like there is something else all these people complaining are having problems with. Like a lack of GPU or maybe not using the proper GPU drivers.

Man, changing to the "new" midday lighting for me felt so much better. Everything just seemed a bit more crisp honestly.
