I don’t participate in the Second Life forums very often except to share a picture here and there or ask a question. I probably should have stuck to that, but yesterday I took part in two threads, both of which ended up being locked. I am so thankful for you all here. There are several people there that suck the oxygen out of the fucking world.

The first was a thread Sid started in frustration over yet another discusssion being locked by LL mods. It devolved into…I don’t even know what to say other than a clusterfuck. I did get the last post in before it was locked. LOL several times I got the timer warning that I needed to wait 30 seconds before posting, that is how fired up I was. There are a few voices of reason there, but the signal to noise ratio is awful.

The other thread that went super fucking well was about someone who hosted a pride themed meditation, and a woman was offended that she introduced a song from a gay Japanese ( spoiler alert - actually Korean) female artist. Said Karen complained loudly that the host was injecting sex into things because she dared to use the word gay (and you know lesbians are such notorious sex fiends). That thread of course was a trainwreck that ran the gamut from “gays are shoving things in my face” and “where is straight pride” to “my family and friends have no problem with alphabet people but they are annoying so they are getting a backlash” and “I don’t understand why (trans slur) support Hamas”. It was beyond ridiculous.

I started reading that first discussion when it began, but quickly realised it wasn't worth the effort to try and follow so wisely skipped it.

In general, I get the impression that almost any meta-discussion of Second Life on the Community Forums is an exercise in sadomasochism — it's liable to erupt into flamewars at any moment from people with Very Specific & Correct Views about Second Life who will absolute not change their viewpoint.

Personally, while I have my qualms about how Linden Labs operates, and have trimmed my Second Life accordingly, I'm not of the opinion that The Sky Is Falling, or that it's the younglingsnewbies that are ruining everything.

There was one person who was literally arguing about the meaning of words, and how DARE someone use a word or phrase differently. The amount of gatekeeping that goes on by little entrenched tyrants is awful.

Well I was never a big fan of the official forums, since they were IMHO always too much "yeah yeah SL yeah yeah" while having that tendency of supressing other opinions, even justified slightest bits of criticism.

Anyway what baffled me: since when are the Moles moderating the forums? This looks really strange to me...

That surprised me too. I admit I don’t know a lot about the moles, but I am confused that the moderators are not Lindens.

There are a few things to like on the official forums:
Most important ones are for me:
A: They are about Second Life.
B: There are nice people around there too just like here and a few with very much knowledge about Second Life.

There is moderation, and as long as the two Moles are on the job, that goes reasonable well too. That the said thread that I started was locked was totally a good thing it went already down the drain after page 2.

The great inconsistency is when Lindens step in.
Some of them step in threads from time to time and are really helpful, others think that when they have responded everything about the subject is said and close the thread, like Tommy Linden more than once did over there. I get the impression that he only sees the forums as extra work for him, so he locks everything asap, that means less work.

Some Lindens still think that they are de Gods. Not realizing enough that we the customers fork up their income and make sure Second Life is still around after all those years.

Quartz and Dyna Mole are the two Moles in charge on a daily basis there. They do a pretty good job IMHO.

Lindens only step in these days when they think that they have to defend Linden Labs interests.
And at that moment consistency in moderation leaves the building. As I wrote in the post above already:

Some Lindens still think that they are de Gods. Not realizing enough that we the customers fork up their income and make sure Second Life is still around after all those years.

I don't understand how the mods over there continue to allow [redacted] to spew her homophobic hateful trolling garbage. Not even a thinly veiled level of toxic narcissism, the kind that will perpetually stand right at the edge of the tos/cs waving a red cape trying to dare people to charge at her.

If LL is willing to sacrifice the revenue from their merchants over a technicality, makes me wonder what's she got on them that has given her such robust plot armor?

I noticed one (at least one of the threads) had at least one person that kept calling you Christiano or Chris. I was actually surprised when you continued replying to their posts and didn't make a comment about names.

I occasionally try to use the official forums more, but I have a hard time following on threaded conversations on forums when theybget real busy. This and like one other forum are the only forums I regularly visit because they are a bit slower, but even here I often end up avoiding some of the busier threads because it's hard to keep up.

The Official forums definitely feel like they suffer a bit too much from a common issue in huge forums, where there are a small number of regulars with opinions who tend to dominate the discussions.

It's a bit less of an issue on smaller forums because the majority of users tend to also be regulars.

Literally all communities suffer from the "echo chamber effect" to some extent. It's a hard thing to totally avoid. I think it's a lot worse in places like reddit due to the voting system. Sub reddits become VERY powerful echo chambers for whatever that subreddit is aiming for.

I have no idea what an echo reaction would look like but am obligated to ask for one because that's what we do here and here is here and only here.

I was so pissed off by other things that was the least of my worries.
