Investigation launched after Gene Hackman and his wife found dead

No foul play suspected yet, though I wonder how two deaths doesn't raise that question.

BBC News: Death of Hackman and wife 'suspicious enough' for investigation, police say

Authorities reported no signs of injury but deemed the deaths "suspicious enough" to investigate and have not ruled out foul play. No cause of death was given...

The circumstances of their death were "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation", said the search warrant, because the person who called emergency services found the front door of the property open.

But the detective observed no sign of forced entry into the home. Nothing appeared out of place inside. Neither was there any indication that belongings had been rummaged through, or that any items had been removed."

Regarding suspicions of carbon monoxide poisoning:

The local utility responded and found no sign of a gas leak in the area. The fire department detected no indication of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning, according to the search warrant.

Not to get god-awfully clinical, but CO poisoning is usually pretty obvious -- first, a CO source will be found and it is either still operating or has run out of fuel but is still set to "on." Second, the victims' faces are "florid" -- CO makes you look like you are deeply blushing. (I'm not sure how long that lasts, post mortem, though. I know for sure it is true for survivors, and it lasts until you get them into a hyperbaric O2 chamber and drive the CO out of their tissues for a few hours.)

She died approximately one week before he did. Poor guy lived with a corpse for a week before he passed. Eww!

And apparently he was senile, so may have been too confused to call authorities.

To be so disabled from a heart condition to not even call 911 for a week ... he does not deserve that.

Yeah but... having a hospice care nurse there at least some of the time could have prevented A LOT. This is a very grim and tragic end to such a beloved figure.

A lot of Ms Quandry's clients have various stages of dementia. He was described as late stage, which means there is very little short term memory getting through. He would not have remembered he was married to her if they had been less than about 30 years married, and his reactions and instincts would have been those of a young child. He would have had difficulty recognizing there was a corpse in the house. They said he was not dehydrated, so he was able to get himself food and water.

Her company has many clients who are in less advanced stages for whom they do at least 3 4-hour shifts a week for basic assistance and to contact family if there are problems. In cases with a spouse who is able to provide care they still do respite and some assistance.

The root problem is that Arakawa misjudged the severity of her own illness and didn't seek medical care when she fell ill. One woman taking care of a spouse in the late stages of Alzheimer's, without any care system in place (which presumably they could have afforded), is a disaster waiting to happen. And it did.

There was a lot of dysfunction going on there. This was never going to end well.
