Ellicott is the long-time best friend of corrupt Florida tax official Joel Greenberg, who was Gaetz’s wingman in the underage sex operation, according to several sources with direct knowledge of their relationship. Last year, The Daily Beast revealed that Ellicott knew intimate details about the teenage girl who was paid for sex by the group—and actually texted what essentially amounted to a confession that they were scrambling to try and coverup details about their sex with a 17-year-old from the feds.

Congressional House Ethics investigators have obtained text messages allegedly showing that a few months after first joining Congress, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz asked a young woman, who at the time had received payments for sex from Gaetz's then-close friend Joel Greenberg, to join him and others on a three-day trip to the Florida Keys in May 2017, multiple sources tell ABC News.

In the alleged text messages described exclusively to ABC News, the then-freshman congressman appeared to message a woman, who ABC News is not identifying, asking if she would fly on a private plane to the Florida Keys for a trip with Gaetz, three other women, and one other man.

If she was at least 18 than her age has no legal relevance to the case. It can still be sex trafficking, just not of a minor.

Admittedly my only source for US law is Google, but it seems that, to obtain a conviction in either a federal or state court, the prosecution would have to prove coercion if she was 18 or over at the time of the alleged offence:

Sex trafficking is not the point of at least this part of the current investigation.

The direct contact the text messages display between Gaetz and the woman in question would show that Gaetz's spokesperson, and so Gaetz indirectly, lied about his knowledge of her. As somewhat pointed out in the article:

A spokesperson for Gaetz told ABC News, "Rep. Gaetz has no knowledge of these activities by Mr. Greenberg and was not involved in them. Rep. Gaetz has never paid for sex. Rep. Gaetz does not know anything about the woman you're referencing, though he takes thousands of selfies each year."

If it can be shown Gaetz at any time paid her for sex, or was aware his creepy party partner Joel Greenberg had been paying her for sex, then Gaetz has a problem. The solicitation or purchase of sexual activities, with or without the added nicety of human trafficking, is still illegal in Florida.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz on Thursday was served a subpoena to sit for a deposition in a civil lawsuit that involves allegations he had sex with a 17-year old-girl, sources tell ABC News, as part of a suit brought by a friend of the congressman against the young woman and others.

Gaetz was issued the subpoena, which has not been previously reported, by attorneys representing the woman who is now in her 20s and was at the center of a years-long investigation by the Justice Department into allegations that the Florida congressman had sex with her when she was a minor, sources said.

The congressman's deposition is slated for April 5, according to sources, and is part of a sprawling defamation and racketeering lawsuit brought by Gaetz's longtime friend, former Florida House member and lobbyist Chris Dorworth, against the woman and others.

The House Ethics Committee revealed in an unusual statement on Tuesday the status of its investigation of GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on allegations ranging from sexual misconduct, drug use and obstruction.

The statement noted there has been a "significant and unusual amount of public reporting on the Committee's activities this Congress," and said "much of that reporting has been inaccurate." The panel disclosed which allegations it is continuing to review about Gaetz and which it is not.

According to the release, the committee is still examining whether Gaetz may have "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct."
