Hmm I thought I heard they were going to start charging all accounts the same prices, regardless of them being grandfathered. Can anyone confirm?

That would be such a slap in the face for all those grandfathered accounts that supported them for all those years if true.
The prices for new pro-accounts were raised more than two years ago, old pro-accounts -have- been grandfathered... till now. With the changes that will end and all pro accounts will have to pay the new (doubled) price. Free members who upgrade to pro will get a 30 % rebate for the first year.

Of course there are cheaper or free alternatives for storage, and nobody should rely on a website to store valuable content (though people will keep being uninformed, lazy or not careful enough and just do that.) But Flickr is not just about storage, in it's golden days it was a nice community, and it's still about exposure and communication. I don't know how big the percentage of private photo archives is, I only upload stuff I want to be public.

I understand that they had to change their business model, you can't expect people to pay for a minimum of extra features when you could have 1 TB for free. But the way they are doing this seems at least a bit dickish. And not really thought through, either. It will drive away a lot of people, and those who find their content deleted and their websites broken will probably not invest the time and money to reupload, reorganize and retag their pictures. There would have been alternatives. Cap the maximum number from day X, grandfather old content, or at least give people more time to download their pictures resp. don't delete right away. And maybe offer a cheaper solution for the numerous photographers who don't need unlimited space and picture size.

Instagram is a non-starter for me. Being restricted to one shape of photo is just not the look. And the constant wrestling with FB with getting deleted for being a 'fake account' - while the trolls who goon around the political and news groups get away scott free - is not worth my time. When I hit 1K, I guess I'll go pro.

Fuck sake ..... the owner of this very forum owns and runs a decent photo gallery setup people can use.

And he mentioned it already!

Yeah, I have had an account since 2006 so would be a bit pissed if they up and removed 3/4 of my photos.

I understand storage and bandwidth can be expensive, but I'm sad that a lot of things currently hosted there will probably vanish. So many cool libraries on the most diverse topics, like art deco, house plans, architecture, old movie stars, foreign movie posters, and so much more. I love browsing all the interesting albums you can find on Flickr. This blows. And 100 picks? Why not a certain amount of space, like 1GB? Not all images weight the same. One's 1000 images could be someone's else 5.000.

I wish there was a place people could upload and the images would just stay there. Something like the archive.org, but only for images.
Exactly! I have close to 4,000 pics there but according to their stats I am using 0% of my terabyte.

If you have Amazon Prime it includes unlimited photo storage.

Still paid but a lot of people have Amazon Prime.
Yes, but unfortunately I only got amazon prime this year and have had flickt since 2006. Am I supposed to download all my images and reupload them to prime? Well, I know where my pics will go in the future, there or google drive, but they were not options way back at the start of my photo collection.

Not sure of date/postcount
One plus is that current pro members have the option of downloading a zipped up file of all their stuff, I’m going to do that before I decide what else to do. My photos are not showing up on Snapzilla as of last night so I was waiting to see if they show today.
I also made an sl Instagram account, I don’t mind uploading a Square ‘snapshot’ of many of my pix.

But yes, this has just been another reminder for me to get my website set up and host most of my own stuff and start some social media dependence weaning. 👶🏻🍼
Partake yes, rely on, no.

Another stray thought: outside of an archive or a retrospective, I’m thinking I only want about my most recent 1k images to be visible as an accurate current representation of my virtual being (and sightseeing) anyway. I’m not interested in posting or reposting images from last year or older unless it’s relevant to the topic. Things change so fast in VW. I mostly want the fresh stuff! And if I’m feeling nostalgic, I’m willing to go to a blog to indulge myself. As even a hobby photographer also, I’m not even interested in last month’s stuff of mine so I suspect no one else will be either.

Fauve, message me - I noticed some of your pictures were blank, which I've never seen - I want to diagnose what's happening for you with Snapzilla.

It turned out to be a simple fix - your images all ended with .jpeg, which I needed to add a setting for.

For my own part, the reason I never set up a Snapzilla was because a proportion of what I post to Flickr isn't compatible with the Snapzilla ToS, or at least what I recall the ToS to be.

I've set up one now however, which I'll try and start populating soon. However, I don't really like splitting my work between multiple locations. If Flickr really does die, I expect the Deviant Art SL community may see a resurgence, so I may go back there.

I hope that even though Snapzilla doesn't support adult content, you will continue to share some of your images on Snapzilla. They are incredible.

That's very kind of you to say, thank you.

I'll definitely try and post anything suitable to Snapzilla, and I do have a fair bit of backlog I can slowly port over.

On the subject of adult material, with the impending Flickr change, would you consider rethinking what is an isn't suitable for Snapzilla? Perhaps coming up with a way to implement a ratings system? The reason I bring this up, I doubt I'm the only one reluctant to use the service because they don't want to separate their collections between multiple locations. I'm not saying you should consider allowing the fairly explicit porn that seems to fly on Flickr, but if you were to open up to some degree Snapzilla might become a more viable alternative to a larger number of folks.

I am not opposed to it. I will check what the policies are of the new host, and look at implementing a ratings system. I would never allow full on pixel porn, but I am open to more mature content if I can allow it and find a way to have people opt in to seeing it.

I could potentially manage a portal like flickr as used to work on a dating site project that would be easy to convert to galleries. My host is unlimited size-wise BUT it can only have a certain amount of unique users (5k at the moment, had no need to increase). I have 100 projects to do and dealing with all those people needing things would suck. I only say that as Flickr's decision is understantable from web dev point - to fill current 1TB limit of a free account, you'd need 10k full resolution, ucompressed files. I'd probably go with 100GB and no photo limit.

Unfortunately, staff did not make proper announcements and people learned of 100% price rise after membership renewal plus their previous press release said something totally different. If they done it with respect to their users and phrased and implemented it differently - that'd be fine. I was on 200 picture limit Flickr and was grand but only because of other features: groups, legible comments, photofeed, ability to tag and search, albums, faves as something you can track and so on.

So .... Flickr still wins as it has those unlike Instagram that lacks even a tag field, folders or any feature needed for a community. Deviantart might be similar but it is dated and UI is not best. Facebook .... yeah .... I would prefer it burned (it also keeps banning my account .... my proper one. I just refuse to have my face picture there and have an icon).
