I've very deliberately not updated firestorm. ...you guys tell me when it's safe, lol.
Oh it's safe.....if you have plenty of RAM, and reasonably good hardware. You'll want something better than what I have, I think, especially if you want to keep shadows on, because I don't.

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz (3744.15 MHz) (quad core, hyperthreaded so 8 total threads. Boosts up to 4Ghz.)
Memory: 31979 MB (Used: 530 MB)
Concurrency: 8
OS Version: Linux 6.9.4-200.fc40.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Jun 12 13:33:34 UTC 2024 x86_64
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2 (this is the GDDR6 version so it's better than the baseline 1650's)
Graphics Card Memory: 4096 MB
Graphics Card Memory (Detected): 4096 MB
Graphics Card Memory (Budget): Unlimited
OpenGL Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 550.90.07

Am I experiencing a small performance hit? Yes. Has there been some weird behavior? Yes, with HUD's detaching and other things. Has the client crashed unexpectedly, which is unusual for Firestorm on Linux. Most certainly yes, it did. Was it able to handle the opening ceremonies at SL21B? Yes.

I have an RTX 3090 graphics card
32GB RAM
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor 3.40 GHz

So I think the biggest difference between our systems is the GPU. Maybe that's enough... But I'll still sit on the update a bit to see if they patch it for performance.

I've always loved Firestorm and yes, before that, Emerald (until the scandal), but I had to revert to the previous version in order to have anything over 5fps and even at times with less then 10 people on my rp sim having a grand total of just 2.7fps. Unworkable. I am not sure how the official viewer would work since I rely on rlv in my rp and it doesn't have it. is there any other viewer that does well in SL with rlv? And please anyone have a good environment they can recommend to keep the world from looking so dull? Many thanks in advance!

Great news: the massive performance drops many users were complaining about using the new PBR-Firestorm viewer have now been officially confirmed. The problem lies within some portions of the PBR code the Firestorm devs adopted.

Linden Lab is now working together with the Firestorm devs on a solution, which must be a new thing. The official recommendation in the meantime is if you are affected switching back to a non-PBR version of the viewer.
