This time around, attachments are not enabled on posts in any forums. It became too much of a storage and performance burden. There are plenty of sites to host content if you need to, and Xenforo has extensive embed support for a variety of sites.

I never use attachments so I'm not going to miss it.

Sorry - it was a genie I always wanted to put back in the bottle on SLU but never did. Allowing file attachment uploads also opens up some legal vulnerabilities as well with a public forum.
I totally get it. And thanks for the update to the policy.

OK, I get it, but I has a sad.

I had a bunch of hosted images vanish when icanhascheeseburger had a purge, the nice thing about attachments stored locally is that they can be depended to last as long as the context lasts.

I had a bunch of my favorite girly smilies saved on SLU's custom smiley list, which served me well since Photobucket went stupid. I'm not sure if the same can be done here... *huge kitten eyes*

I'm having trouble posting using the media choice. YouTube was ok after a third try, it kept telling me YT wasn't a viable media choice, and Flickr didn't happen. It could be from my end because the last hour has been weird (connection?) Anyhoo, just posting in case others are also having trouble. I'm off now.

Hmm, it lists 'approved sites' for media. Can we not just use a url to link to an image if it is on another site?

@Cristiano maybe you could check if there is a limit for users to attach media in the forums. Maybe the limit can be set by user or by group. This way, you'd be sure users can attach a few images if they are interested, but at the same time they wouldn't waste that resource adding "silly things". For example, you could limit 5 Mbytes per user, which is enough. It would also help to keep server space optimized.

You could also use this feature as a subscription option, for example. Regular users 5 Mbytes, but subscribers could have 20 Mbytes if they pay those 10$ extra yearly.

I am considering allowing attachments, but it would be a premium thing, with some basic attachment support added once you've reached a certain number of posts or age of your account. Xenforo is much more granular with its permissions.

doing something would be good.. I don't remember any of my flickr logins and I have no idea where else to load them where they won't vanish.

I think you are opening the same can of worms you wanted to close up in the past. If you want to give something to premium supporters, maybe consider setting up a separate image hosting site on a subdomain.

Here's a couple of server scripts I found that could be used:
Free image hosting script - Chevereto Free
codefuture.co.uk - CF Image Hosting Script v1.65

Grab an account at Imgur. That's what I use to link the tons of images I use on my forum and will be linking the images on my blog from there as well. Best part is it's free. You don't actually need an account but if you want to organize and store for later retreival, an account is the best way to go. And it's free. lol

Still using flickr. And wholly agree with not hosting images locally. Stuff of nightmares that is.

Yeah, I would recommend imgur as a site as well. If I didn't have my own sites to actually host stuff, I would use it.
