So NOW I'm going back and reading all the Quest VR threads.

Cris, Quest may be the break-out VR you've been waiting for. I would count my sale alone as a bellweather moment. :p

Anecdotally, it seems that is the case. People are taking their Quests to work and to parties to show people, who are in turn buying them after trying them once. It definitely is the start of a new era for VR.

From my perspective, Beat Saber is the breakthrough product that perfectly shows off VR, while providing an appealing functional purpose to be integrated into people's lives. For the past three days, the first thing I do in the morning before going downstairs to breakfast is a play a round of Beat Saber. This morning I was able to play two rounds in close succession without a panting session in between or even afterwards. So not only is my score improving, I'm showing rapid acclimatization to exercise, which is very inspiring!

And I'm so tempted to take it to work. Aside from the fun factor, there's this large clear space in the middle of the office... I'm often the last one to leave the building, so I could fire up and try it out. :p

People are saying yesterday (Memorial Day) was the day the most people tried Vr for the first time, in the history of ever. Family gatherings happened and lots of people had a few days with their quest and couldn’t wait to show it off.

The demo-to-sale conversion % is pretty crazy.

I don't need the extra power because my playing time will never exceed 2 hours (she says optimistically), but I love that idea of the power brick acting as a counterweight to the front mask. Good god, this is turning into a money sink.... :p

Dev Update #50 - Oculus Quest Beta version and iOS update.

Controllers in SteamVR will now be visible as Oculus Touch controllers.

We are using Oculus Touch model to represent your hands in VR when using Oculus Quest. They have very similar shape and using them provides us the following benefits:

  1. Game developers that created PC VR games often had Oculus Touch controllers in mind when creating their games - ensuring that games will work reliably with this controller mapping.
  2. Oculus Touch controllers have 3D model which is fully animated (you can see button presses in VR).
  3. Oculus Touch controllers are physically similar to Oculus Quest controllers which allowed us to adjust them accordingly.

Speaking of controllers, it's been exactly one week since I bought my Quest and my controller batteries just died. Good thing I ordered a battery charger so I can switch to rechargeable batteries tonight.

I just tried out ALVR, and so far I prefer it to Vridge. SteamVR recognized it as using Oculus Touch controllers, so everything mapped correctly and I could also move in Steam VR Home, which I could not do on Vridge. Google Earth worked much better because it had the correct controller. I'll keep an eye on the development of both. I installed the new VRidge beta, but I am still getting Vive controllers (as are others on the Vridge subreddit). ALVR just instantly worked.

I tried out VRChat through SteamVR from my PC using ALVR on the Quest (instead of the Quest version of VRChat). It worked really well so far - I can use my normal avatar:

I'm busy looking up these terms -- SteamVR, AVLR -- and trying to figure out how to do this and, more importantly, whether I want to do this. Cause right now it's all greek to me.

Cristiano , one of the things I love about this forum is that I'm exposed to so many new ideas and innovations and encouraged to try them. Without SLU/VVO I'd be decades removed from popular culture events that are changing the way people live. Thank you.

Let me see if I've got this straight:
  • SteamVR is like Origin -- a portal/dashboard for downloading and managing VR content/games
  • I install SteamVR to my PC with a simple download
  • I look at the AVLR install instructions and run screaming from the room

Ok here's an explanation of the terms. Also, you probably should not bother with any of it at the moment, it's all alpha and complicated and requires a beefy PC and high speed wireless network connection.

1) SteamVR is a VR platform built in to Steam, originally to support the Vive VR headset but expanded to support Oculus as well. It is what you launch to play VR games that are on Steam. Oculus has their own storefront as well - it is the same as the one you are used to on the Quest, but for PC titles.
2) SteamVR is easy to install, though the setup can be a little tricky.
3) ALVR and VRidge are solutions that allow you to use PC vr titles on other headsets via streaming. There are early versions of both for the Quest. It has a piece of PC software and something you install on the Quest. The PC part is easy - you just download something and run it, and it acts as a server to stream the PC VR title to the Quest. However, setting up the Quest app requires sideloading onto the Quest, a process that is not simple. It involves putting the Quest into developer mode, plugging it into your PC via USB and downloading the app and some support files and running a command to install it on the Quest.

I am someone who likes to try bleeding edge kind of stuff, so that's why I'm experimenting with them. I would not recommend it for most users, especially if you did not already have a PC VR setup to begin with.
