Justice Department opens probe into Jeffrey Epstein plea deal

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta’s role in negotiating a controversial plea deal with a wealthy New York investor accused of molesting more than 100 underage girls in Palm Beach.

The probe is in response to a request by Sen. Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who was critical about the case following a series of stories in the Miami Herald. The Herald articles detailed how Acosta, then the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and other DOJ attorneys worked hand-in-hand with defense lawyers to cut a lenient plea deal with multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein in 2008.

What a complete mess. And because there were plea deals and grants of immunity involved, it's questionable whether Epstein himself could even legally be charged with anything new now even if there's a finding of impropriety, because double-jeopardy protection DGAF about procedural screwups.

This is pretty surprising considering one of Epstein's victims openly accused Trump of raping her at an Epstein party when she was 13.
Indeed - only for that allegation to be dropped, presumably with no connection whatsoever to either defendant's legal resources, and there's naturally no suggestion of hush money.

Her lawyer said she dropped the lawsuit and cancelled a scheduled press conference because of death threats. I don't know if he suggested they were from Trump or just rabid Trump fans.

Federal prosecutors broke law in Jeffrey Epstein case, judge rules

A judge ruled Thursday that federal prosecutors — among them, U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta — broke federal law when they signed a plea agreement with a wealthy, politically connected sex trafficker and concealed it from more than 30 of his underage victims. U.S. District Judge Kenneth A. Marra, in a 33-page opinion, said that the evidence he reviewed showed that Jeffrey Epstein had been operating an international sex operation in which he and others recruited underage girls — not only in Florida — but from overseas, in violation of federal law.

“Epstein used paid employees to find and bring minor girls to him.,’’ wrote Marra, who is based in Palm Beach County. “Epstein worked in concert with others to obtain minors not only for his own sexual gratification, but also for the sexual gratification of others.’’

Of others.

No need to bet there's a lot of high profile folk hoping this sentence fragment isn't looked into any time soon.
