I had a thought yesterday. I requested my absentee ballot on Sep 1st, and the state site says they issued it Sep 21st, but it hasn't arrived in the mail yet. So I started thinking about what if I need to do early voting. I have a lot of folding camp chairs from my days of doing large camping events. So I thought I could bring a bunch with me to give people waiting in line a place to sit. If you end up waiting in line and have the chairs, bring one for yourself, and one for a friend. It will make any long lines easier to bear.
It's a good suggestion and could help with distancing by pointedly sitting 7 feet apart. Going with a friend and/or bringing the chair and making a friend will help make the wait (if any) easier to bear. If ever there was a year when we need to promote turnout by every means possible, it's this one. I don't care how much progressives dislike Biden or the Democratic party's institutional preferences, there is no excuse for not repudiating Trump and EVERY Republican on the ballot. An overwhelming Blue vote will punish them with the only currency they care about - power and its loss.

ETA: We completed our ballots this weekend and Margo will hand-deliver them to a secure ballot drop box at the election supervisor's office parking lot tomorrow.

I question how much of a progressive a 'progressive' is if they voluntairly go backwards to punish the more progressive of two choices for not getting their way. This progressive might not have had Biden as a -first- choice, but I don't dislike him, or Harris.

Also, still waiting for our ballots - hoping that they get here soon, but I guess Sally screwed things up a little.

Yeah, we haven't gotten ours yet either, and while there could be some delay due to Sally, it should have been here by now.

The good news is that early voting here is usually not painfully long....
I just got the voter information guide in the mail from my county, so hopefully the actual ballots aren't much later. I need to study the California propositions to figure out which ones I want to approve or disapprove though. I haven't spent as much time as I should have doing that so far.

Pelosi begins mustering Democrats for possible House decision on presidency

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has begun mobilizing Democrats for the possibility that neither Joe Biden nor President Donald Trump will win an outright Electoral College victory, a once-in-a-century phenomenon that would send the fate of the presidency to the House of Representatives to decide.

Under that scenario, which hasn’t happened since 1876, every state’s delegation gets a single vote. Who receives that vote is determined by an internal tally of each lawmaker in the delegation. This means the presidency may not be decided by the party that controls the House itself but by the one that controls more state delegations in the chamber. And right now, Republicans control 26 delegations to Democrats’ 22, with Pennsylvania tied and Michigan a 7-6 plurality for Democrats, with a 14th seat held by independent Justin Amash.

Democracies have been lost by relying on the belief that "he can't do that" because there are laws and regulations against it.
...
is proof that rule of law is growing increasingly irrelevant to any outcome.
The UK is rapidly heading down the same hole...

I've moved the rest of this response to the 'Brexit' thread Brexit.

Meanwhile in the Czech Republic there is in general no mail voting. Instead the government has been building drive-in voting stations for infected people so that they are able to vote.

That's the modern America for us - being able to send repeatedly men on the moon and to attack nearly anywhere on the planet, but unable to organize a normal election.

The last time we were able to do that was 1972.

They're still planning to fuck up the mail, and right in broad daylight.

An order by the U.S. Postal Service to pull its uniformed police officers off city streets has sparked a legal battle pitting it against a police union, when the agency is already under scrutiny for delivery delays in a presidential election that could hang on mail-in ballots.

The agency’s unilateral order ended daily patrols meant to prevent robberies of blue collection boxes and mail vehicles, and has left letter carriers without escorts on unsafe routes in some of the nation’s biggest cities, according to interviews with police officers and union representatives opposed to the change and a copy of the directive, titled “Postal Police Utilization,” reviewed by the Wall Street Journal.

That this coup probably will not work — that it is being carried out farcically, erratically, ineffectively — does not mean it is not happening, or that it will not have consequences. Millions will believe Trump, will see the election as stolen. The Trump family’s Twitter feeds, and those of associated outlets and allies, are filled with allegations of fraud and lies about the process (reporter Isaac Saul has been doing yeoman’s work tracking these arguments, and his thread is worth reading). It’s the construction of a confusing, but immersive, alternative reality in which the election has been stolen from Trump and weak-kneed Republicans are letting the thieves escape.

This is, to borrow Hungarian sociologist Bálint Magyar’s framework, “an autocratic attempt.” That’s the stage in the transition toward autocracy in which the would-be autocrat is trying to sever his power from electoral check. If he’s successful, autocratic breakthrough follows, and then autocratic consolidation occurs. In this case, the would-be autocrat stands little chance of being successful. But he will not entirely fail, either.

Lying for the president’s sake also requires lying to everyone else in the nation. It is easy, especially for political journalists, to become inured to the way in which certain government officials treat their jobs as analogous to those of the cast and crew of The Truman Show, and to forget that the United States is more than just a collection of people in government. It is an actual country with people in it. Many of those people cannot discern that all of this talk of illegal votes and Trump’s paths to victory is merely being done to help Trump come to terms with his loss.

Which makes Donald Trump a bit like Batkid, the young cancer patient on whose behalf the city San Francisco and the Make-a-Wish Foundation once staged a full day of make-believe superheroism—if roughly 40 percent of the residents of San Francisco genuinely believed the charade was real, believed Batkid was their only chance to stop the forces of evil descending on their city, and couldn’t understand why the media kept claiming The Riddler had fairly defeated him and would soon be in charge.
