When thinking in geological time frames we are living right now in an ice age - because there's an ice shelf at top and bottom of the globe. The phase of this ice age we're living right now again is the holocene, which is the current warm period.Presumably, given enough time, the world's temperatures will revert to a mean average, simply by the laws of mathematics.
When living in an ace age, warm and cold periods do change swap periodically, roughly 80000 years its colder and then 20000 years warmer. Our warm period started around 12000 years ago. This is being called the Milankovic cycle.
So Earth is always changing between warm and cold ages, and cold ages again changing between warm and cold periods.
So far in the planets history there were 6 ice ages, which lasted roughly around 525 million years. We're living right now in the Late Cenozoic Ice Age, which started roughly 39 million years ago. This means in the long run Earth is always moving between icehouse and greenhouse earth hence and forth.
