Let's not ban books. Let's just dump then in a landfill!

New College of Florida tosses hundreds of library books, empties gender diversity library
Hundreds of New College of Florida library books, including many on LGBTQ+ topics and religious studies, are headed to a landfill.

A dumpster in the parking lot of Jane Bancroft Cook Library on the campus of New College overflowed with books and collections from the now-defunct Gender and Diversity Center on Tuesday afternoon. Video captured in the afternoon showed a vehicle driving away with the books before students were notified. In the past, students were given an opportunity to purchase books that were leaving the college's library collection.

Inspired by her upbringing, the 78-year-old country music legend has made it her mission over the past three decades to improve literacy through her Imagination Library book giveaway program. It has expanded statewide in places like Missouri and Kentucky, two of 21 states where all children under the age of 5 can enroll to have books mailed to their homes monthly.

Just learned that the first western was written by a women in 1889.

The novel's heroine, Mary, is a teacher who moves from Indiana to Colorado and marries a local cowboy named Jim. A successful rancher, Jim finds himself the subject of malicious and false rumors that he is a cattle rustler and is murdered by vigilantes while in the sheriff's custody, leaving his widow the "administratrix" of his estate. To find Jim's murderers and avenge his death, Mary disguises herself as a cowboy and infiltrates the gang responsible for lynching her husband.

While it’s not unusual for other industries to dedicate staff to influencing or changing public policy, it’s virtually unheard of in the relatively sleepy world of book publishing. Rosalie Stewart, however, has just been hired as Penguin Random House’s senior public policy manager, a new position that will fight the recent explosion in book-banning campaigns at schools and public libraries. At present, for example, officials in Texas and Iowa have attempted to argue that the book collections held by schools and libraries constitute “government speech” and are therefore not protected by the First Amendment. This bid to redefine the nature of public libraries was rejected by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Iowa, but for Texas, the matter is being weighed by the notorious extremists on the “rogue” 5thCircuit. I spoke with Stewart recently about the battle before her. Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

What am I reading here I ask myself. This part is about dolphins.

Epics, Hagbard said. They are mad for epics. They have their whole story for the last 40,000 years in epic form. No books, no writing - how could they handle pens with their fins you know? All memorization. Which is why they favor poetry. And their poems are marvelous, but you must spend years studying their language to know that. Our computer turns their works into doggerel. It's the best it can do. When the Porpoise Corpus is translated into human languages it will advance our culture by centuries or more. It will be as if we discovered the works of a whole race of Shakespeares that had been writing for 40 millenia.

There was a George Harrison biography on sale today on Kindle and I thought, "Sure, Inlike the Beatles, George Harrison seems interesting, that picture on the cover seems off but they like to use unexpected images sometimes on these."

Then after buying, I realized I was confusing George Harrison with Ringo Starr. I don't really care about George Harrison...

My last trip to the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore was... a bit -heavier- than usual. At least physically. =)

Couple of sequels(Doors of Midnight/Bookshops&Bone Dust),
a couple of favorite authors (Powers/Lyons)
A recommendation from staff (The Will & The Way)
and a couple LGBTQ+-ish titles (Infinity Alchemist/Swordcrossed)

Should keep me going through the holiday season. =)
