AMD has just announced in Taipei the next generation of CPUs and GPUs which they are going to release later this year.

The claims for the new range of CPUs are quite impressive: very low power consumption for a desktop processor, in fact one of the lowest ever. The number of cores for the high level CPU has increased, as well. And AMD claims to be on par, or even ahead Intel in terms of single core performance, comparing a 4.5 GHz AMD CPU against 5.0 GHz Intel. Of course it this stands true, we'll only know more about probably in July.

All of the CPUs are priced very aggressively low as well, giving Intel probably quite a headache and tough competition. Here's a chart done by AMD, so again take with a grain of salt:

Those new CPUs are going to be available starting 7th of July this year.

The new GPU - Radeon RX 5000 - is coming there as well, but less data is being available at the moment. We only got some numbers: 25% better computational power per cycle (IPC) compared to Vega GPUs and 50% more energy efficient. But one difference to nVidia: no raytracing technology yet. The launch for the new AMD GPUs is also scheduled for July this year.

They are also releasing 6-core CPUs that are more interesting for mid-range computers.

Both single and multi-core performance of the 3600x should be comparable to current i7's, for $100+ less. The even more mainstream 3600 is going to be the chip of the year.

The 3600x is not even on the chart which AMD produced. Well for sure we're in interesting times, the fabless AMD already using 7nm technology while Intel announced the first products for this in 2021, giving Intel a run for its money.

While one of Intel's biggest customers, Apple, complained about having experienced less growth than possible in the last quarter due to Intel having manufacturing problems in the old 10/14nm process, which did result in supply difficulties to Apple.

The pricing should make Intel fans happy. When AMD announced its Radeon Vega 7 graphics cards a couple of months ago, the AMD fan boards were loaded with complaints about the pricing, which wasn't substantially lower than Nvidia's top-tier consumer cards. The complaints weren't coming from AMD fans who wanted the cards; they were coming from hordes of Nvidia fans who had no interest in the cards whatsoever, but who rely upon AMD's competitive pricing for new products to force Nvidia to cut prices on those shiny Ti's they want so much. That didn't happen after the Vega 7 pricing announcement so like there was some serious fury at AMD there, lol.

I imagine sworn Intel users probably wait for AMD's CPU announcements for similar reasons. If that's the case, they definitely won't be disappointed.

Also, native DDR3200 support....dang. What a bad time to not have disposable cash.

Yeah. I just bought an Oculus Quest for $399 not counting tax. I probably would have to get a new Motherboard too since my current one is probably over 4 years old.

I wonder if this might presage a return for AMD to laptops? The quad core i9 in the current MacBook Pro has a 35W TDP - if they could trim the core count down, it feels they might be able to hit that. Does anyone know if they have any interest in that market?

I don't think so. Many are expecting that the Qualcomm 8CX is going to be the next big thing in the notebook segment: announced in fall 2018, first devices are going to be expected around soon. It's the first CPU specifically designed by Qualcomm for the PC market. The promise of the 8CX is speed comparable to an Intel i5, while featuring up to 20 hours of run time with one battery charge.

This ARM based CPU offers on paper comparable performance to Intel, while using much less power. Even for AMD it would be hard to reach this low power consumption ARM has, because due to the differences in CPU instruction sets.

Apple is also expected to switch over from Intel to ARM using their own designs in 2020, or so.

According to the computex keynote (note, it is marketing) there is lots of interest in that market, and OEMs are combining AMD CPUs and GPUs in laptops. And there is this:

A claim is just that - a claim. Of course it might be based on preorders AMD got by the big manufacturers; but if it is going to withstand the real market share in this year we'll have to see.

And from nearly zero to 50% is a real bold claim in my opinion; a way too bold claim. I would take it with the proverbial grain of salt.
