"Vote for us because the other lot are appalling" only works so many times when you don't have a lot else to offer.
On that note, I really wish Biden made pushing for universal healthcare major issue on his platform. Because that would rally many on the left and it is a popular position overall. Dems play it a little too safe.

The NYT is a joke.

Since I don't link to the NYT, and cannot find the oped on a third party site, I'm linking this DailyKos post about it:

But who are they trying to placate? The US are full of people who need healthcare and can't afford it. Which part of the population do the Democrats think is vehemently against universal healthcare AND might consider voting for anything other than the extremists? Also, there are numerous other issues they ought to push for; from ending Citizens United (a ruling that's been used against them, but they can't bring themselves to rally against it, probably because they hope some of that superPAC dark money will find its way to them) to ending, reversing, and outlawing gerrymandering. Yet, they're not listed as priorities.

I don't have a great answer for you. I think Biden maybe thinks it's better to play it super safe and not rock the boat too much, but I agree he's making a mistake. To me universal healthcare is the best combination of a NEEDED issue that would also rally support. Ending Citizen's United would also be really great but is probably more of a long shot because it requires replacing justices. Packing the court is sadly a lot less popular with voters. But Biden needs to do something more exciting than just not be Trump, I'll agree with that much.

Calls to replace Biden vs. silence on Trump? America has lost its political mind.

We can't function in a society that holds a normal politician like Biden to a far higher standard than an abnormal politician like Trump.

Someone must have dropped America on its head, because this country isn’t making a lick of sense.

President Joe Biden had a disastrous debate performance last week that reinforced concerns about his age and mental acuity. That’s a fact, and it has prompted people in the Democratic Party to ask fair and serious questions about the best path forward.

That makes sense.

It’s a mature, reasonable response, kind of like the response a mature and reasonable person might expect if, to toss out a random example, a political party’s presidential candidate had been convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and found liable for sexual assault and defamation.

Pundits cry for Biden to step aside. Why isn't Trump hearing the same?

Ok, I am watching Biden speak live in Wisconsin, and hearing the crowd chanting "let's go Joe!" made me tear up. Hearing him speak reassured me. So much is on the line, and I am sitting here crying like a baby. He was listing the things he is going to do, and very forcefully said "and most importantly, we are going to save our democracy". I fucking lost it.

Trump benefits from lowered expectations to a really baffling extent. I can think of a big list of politicians and celebrities who've gotten in deep shit for so much less than Trump has done. Al Franken was justifiably blasted out of the Senate for being a creep, but Trump can just do anything.
Most all Trump's supporters genuinely believe he's the second coming of Christ! And those who don't just want to "own the libs." It's sick!

He also benefits from these lower expectations in another way: his fascist ideology and his completely unfit for existence among normal specimens of the homo sapiens species are whitewashed.

People want their cake their way, and don't care if the entire kitchen burns down in the process of trying to make it.
