The Democratic Party really really needs to listen when AOC talks about outreach. She knows what she's talking about. Between her and Stacy Abrams, the party is in good hands, if it doesn't screw it up, which is always a possibility lol.

Its not a one or another thing. Republicans scared of "socialism" is a real thing. It cost Biden Florida. Even so, those people scared of 'socialism' are mostly for progressive policies. There has to be outreach that manages to explain what progressive policies are and what they /aren't/ if there is ever to be a hope of uniting the country in a more hopeful direction.

According to one of my closest friends, a middle-aged white women, living in a middle-class suburb in Ohio, registered as unaffiliated, she was bombarded with election spam from the Republicans but hardly heard from the Democrats in this election
Not sure what the "election spam" was here, but it could also be likely she was once registered Republican, though unaffiliated now.

Letters imploring her to vote for them, from what she said.

I don't think she's ever been a registered Republican -- certainly as long as I've known her (15 or 16 years now) she's been very critical of Republican presidential candidates, though I think she's voted for Republicans for at least some down-ballot positions.

Whatever the case, as we all know the plural of anecdote is not data.

Democrats spent a lot of money in Ohio. Efforts there may not have been as they were in Pennsylvania or Georgia or Arizona, but it wasn't ignored.

Come to think of it, it could simply be that they spent on different things, I guess. She mentioned the mail, but didn't say anything about what she'd seen on TV or social media from the Biden campaign. Or maybe they were sufficiently clued-up to notice she'd voted early, and updated their databases accordingly.

She lives in a pretty red neighbourhood, I think -- she was complaining about how many people have Trump signs up in their yards.

This is why I recommend just talking about the policies, and stay away from labels like "progressive". Whatever the label is, conservatives will demonize it.

Pretty much this.

I know several indies, myself included [though I have to be registered to a party to vote in primaries]. I'm an indie because 1: I don't want to vote based on 'tribe' or 'team', but based on policy and record, 2: I don't feel either party is progressive at all, though it feels like that's changing.

Labels and branding matter. If you ask the same people who oppose "progressives and socialists" if they want expanded access to healthcare, they say yes. If you ask them if they support defunding the police they might go nuclear on you, but if you ask the same people if they support using some police funding to create social programs that will lower rates of violence or deescalate situations (and some of the other proposed ideas), they're for them. Democrats literally suck at branding and once they brand something they refuse to change it.

So let me tell you why I lost all respect for Libertarians in like the 80s. 1987 [I'm pretty sure] the group of 'Young Democrats' that I hung out with decided to go to the Libertarian National convention [grand name for not so grand an event], where they put forth a NA candidate. However, this was well before the other parties had finished their primaries.

Then by the General, they had chosen instead, the bowtie wearing person who'd lost the Dem nomination and -hard-...

It was neat, but when they picked a different candidate and tossed aside someone I think had a bigger claim to such an office, they lost all my respect.

The survey responses in this thread seem to exemplify this point -- the survey is of white voters' attitudes, and subsequent slides show that a majority of them (a smaller majority than urban areas, to be sure, but still a sizeable majority) have pretty progressive social values.

Interesting. Different state but I received mail every day from Democratic organizations.

Sometimes I'd get 2-4 of the same exact thing, lol.

But what are you registered as? I got the same flow of material, but I'm a registered Democrat.
