What is up with virtual currency?

That makes sense. However the exchange value of Lindens to the US dollar has remained completely stable, while all crypto currencies have fallen a lot. That must mean something. Crypto currency (like Bitcoin) seems to be a speculative investment, while Lindens have been amazingly stable. I...

What is up with virtual currency?

There has been a large drop in the value of most kinds of virtual currency today, but not in Lindens. It looks like Lindens are holding steady, according to the Buy Lindens web site. Has anyone bought or sold Lindens today? I suspect that Linden Research has long be regulating the exchange rate...

"Florida Man" is still at it

The FBI just announced that they identified Brian Laundrie's remains. Bones and a backpack with personal items were found in a swampy area of Myakkahatchee Creek, near the Carlton Reserve. The area had been underwater until recently, which prevented searching. It really does look like they found...

"Florida Man" is still at it

My co-worker has a cabin in a remote forest in Michigan. The only access is by a "Forest Road" more than a mile long. This is a gravel road that essentially no one owns. It is on Forest Service land. Since no one maintains it, if it gets too rough to drive a truck on, the resident(s) have to do...

    Missing White Woman Syndrome

Oh that is a good political cartoon GoblinCampFollower! Dog (Duane Chapman) has a new lead. It has been reported on multiple news channels. The Laundries including Brian registered at Fort DeSoto Campground from 9/1 to 9/3/2021 and again from the 9/8 to 9/9. Dog has the paperwork. Strange, as...

    Missing White Woman Syndrome

Dog the Bounty Hunter, plus several other people including a rancher and a former FBI person say Brian Laundrie was likely never in the Carlton swamp. They say he is likely somewhere on or near the Appalachian trail. That is an area he is familiar with. He survived in the wild there for 3 months...

    Missing White Woman Syndrome

There is a huge problem with indigenous women going missing along Canada's "Highway of Tears" (Highway 16). Some are found dead, many are never found. A high percentage of these cases remain unsolved, with no suspects. The cases seem to be concentrated in northern British Columbia, a very...

    Afghanistan Falls

NGO groups continue to try to rescue people who are at risk from the Taliban. There seems to be much confusion about needed passports and visas. Plus the Taliban may be trying to pressure the USA to release the assets of the Afghan central bank (which are mostly deposited in the US). The US has...

    Afghanistan Falls

Regrettably, only a small percentage of the Afghan people wanted liberal (western) democracy. The majority never believed in it. We should have at least evacuated all the interpreters and others who worked for the international forces and those who would be most at risk. The US made a great...

    Afghanistan Falls

Yep. The cost of the Afghanistan war has been immense. It was foolish in the extreme to try to take over and reshape Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires.

    Afghanistan Falls

Don't be so quick to rule out "resources" as a motive for the US "nation building" attempt in Afghanistan. US reports (including reports from the US military and published in the New York Times and Reuters) say Afghanistan has enormous untapped mineral resources. Afghanistan is estimated to have...

    Afghanistan Falls

In Republican doctrine, Washington DC is "The Swamp". It is a political slogan, meaning insiders making back room deals, protecting each others self-interest.

    Afghanistan Falls

I have had an idea rattling around. It goes like this: The Afghan war was unwinnable and unsustainable. A western democratic style government would not be able to stand on its own in Afghanistan, and would need (forever) massive US subsidy as well as thousands of US troops to prop it up. The...

    Afghanistan Falls

The western powers have lots of baggage due to their history with Africa, Asia, and the Middle-East. Centuries of colonialism, and in some places slavery. It is not that surprising that many non-western countries do not trust the west. It is unknown what China will do, but China does not have...

    Afghanistan Falls

The US needs to recognize limits to its power and ability. We can't just go into a completely alien society, and immediately change them into a western liberal democracy. It took western Europe about 1000 years to develop modern democracy from feudal monarchy. This is a social development...

    Afghanistan Falls

I agree 100% with Innula. We should rescue the interpreters, support staff etc. However, I add that our attempt to take control of Afghanistan and "nation build" a western style democracy was doomed from the beginning. It was impossible, and should not have been attempted in the first place.

    Afghanistan Falls

Empires back to Alexander (Greek) and Genghis Khan (Mongol empire), plus also Arabs, the British, and Soviets, tried to rule Afghanistan. None of them lasted long. Afghanistan is the the "graveyard of empires". It is remote, mountainous, and tribal, hard for any outsider to rule there. We had no...

    Afghanistan Falls

It is just on YouTube, and in the news, that president Ashraf Ghani has fled to Tajikistan as the Taliban entered Kabul. The government of Afghanistan has collapsed. The Kabul seems mostly without fighting. Ghani appears to have made a deal to hand over power. There is a frantic situation at...

It had to happen sooner or later....

I am amazed. I thought Prokofy left a long time ago. Maybe he just stopped posting on the forums. I see he is still a land-lord, running Ravenglass Rentals. It is not that easy to run a mainland rental, because you don't have the privacy and control of a private Second Life island.

Virtual Currency, Crypto, and Second Life

So innocent GoblinCampFollower! We are really lucky Linden Lab survived, although the lab had to shut down all 3rd party exchanges. The government was cracking down on virtual currency money laundering in Mt Gox and Liberty Reserve. Neither of those survived. But Lindens survived the 2013...
