The Tenaja Fire burning near Murrieta in Riverside County has continued to be held, and its acreage has been amended to 1,926 acres. Containment has increased to 73 percent.

The Red Bank Fire in Tehama County west of Red Bluff has had its forward progress stopped, currently holding at 8,838 acres, while containment has improved to 50 percent according to Cal Fire. Some evacuations have been lifted.

The Lone Fire in central Modoc County has grown to 5,737 acres, while containment has increased to 55 percent.

The Walker Fire in Plumas County south of Susanville continues to attract a lot of attention as it has exploded in size to 38,049 acres. Containment remains at just five percent. Smoke from the fire is blanketing much of northern California and northwestern Nevada. Mandatory evacuations along US 395 are in effect.

A new fire to show up on the Cal Fire incident site, the Taboose Fire, is burning in the eastern Sierras in northwestern Inyo county. It is reported at 10,500 acres with ten percent containment. The fire was reported last Wednesday afternoon.

The Tenaja Fire near Murrieta in Riverside County is nearing full containment, now at 92 percent, with its acreage held at 1,926 acres.

The Red Bank Fire west of Red Bluff in Tehama County remains at 8,838 acres, while containment increased slightly to 55 percent. Two structures have been destroyed by the blaze.

The Lone Fire in central Modoc County has had forward progress stopped, holding at 5,737 acres. Containment is now at 87 percent. Full containment is expected Thursday.

The Taboose Fire burning in the eastern Sierras in Inyo county remains at an estimated 10,500 acres with 30 percent containment. Downsloping winds are expected over the mountain range, which could increase fire activity.

The Walker Fire burning in Plumas County south of Susanville continues to devour vegetation and whatever else stands in its way. It has charred 44,307 acres and is only ten percent contained. Amazingly, no structures have been lost, though mandatory evacuations of many homes in the area remain in effect. The air quality of northwestern Nevada, particularly the Reno/Sparks area, has been significantly impacted by the smoke, with air quality alerts in effect for the Truckee Meadows.

The Tenaja Fire in Riverside County near Murietta continues to hold at 1,926 acres, and is now 96 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

The Red Bank Fire in Tehama County west of Red Bluff continues to hold at 8.838 acres, while containment has improved to 75 percent.

The Lone Fire in central Modoc County continues to hold at 5,737 acres, while containment has improved to 92 percent.

The Taboose Fire burning in the eastern Sierras in Inyo county has been amended to 9.335 acres. No structures are threatened, but predicted downsloping winds tonight could increase fire activity. The fire is 36 percent contained.

The Walker Fire burning in Plumas County south of Susanville has now grown to 47,340 acres. Containment has improved, but is only 20 percent contained as of this evening. This fire is receiving the attention of over 1,200 firefighters from several states. Brief showers over the area have helped firefighter efforts in containing this blaze.

In Tehama County west of Red Bluff, the Red Bank Fire remains at 8,838 acres, and containment has improved to 80 percent.

Firefighters have managed to stay on top of the Taboose Fire burning in the eastern Sierras in Inyo County, and the predicted downsloping winds failed to materialize. The fire grew just 50 acres to 9,385 acres and is now 47 percent contained.

The Walker Fire, the state's largest fire so far this season, continues to rage in Plumas County south of Susanville. It has grown to 48,508 acres, and is now 28 percent contained. No structures have been damaged, but air quality in northeastern California and northwestern Nevada continues to be an issue.

The Red Bank Fire in Tehama County west of Red Bluff has been fully contained as of Friday. It burned a total of 8.838 acres, and destroyed two structures in the week it had been burning.

The Taboose Fire in western Inyo County grew slightly to 9,438 acres. It is now 59 percent contained.

The Walker Fire in Plumas County south of Susanville continues to grow, now at 52,282 acres as of Saturday evening. Containment improved to 52 percent. A Red Flag warning has been issued for the area ahead of anticipated high winds, which could cause increased fire activity.

The Taboose Fire in western Inyo County has been held to 9,438 acres, while containment has improved to 61 percent.

The Walker Fire in Plumas County south of Susanville is now on its 12th day and has burned 53,186 acres of Plumas National Forest land. Strong winds fanned flames and spread smoke well into northern Nevada. Firefighters may get some help from the weather, however, as some brief periods of rain are forecast for the area.

A series of small brush fires have erupted around the San Diego area over the past couple of days, burning one building, causing evacuations of homes and schools, and snarled traffic, and are believed to be acts of arson. One suspect in the arsons has been arrested.

The Taboose Fire burning in western Inyo County continues to hold at 9,438 acres. Containment, however, has been slow-going, up just one percent from yesterday's reported containment, now at 62 percent.

The bit of wet weather over the area of the Walker Fire in Plumas County south of Susanville has really helped firefighters today. The fire has grown a bit since yesterday to 54,518 acres, but containment has just been reported this evening at 95 percent, a major improvement over the 62 percent reported yesterday. Gusty winds are expected in the area, however, so firefighters still have their work cut out for them.

There are seven active fires burning in California right now. Most of them are small and/or are in remote locations. One of the larger of them is the South Fire burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest west of Red Bluff. It has burned 5,190 acres since it was reported 11 days ago. It is 48 percent contained.

I've kinda let this go for a bit. My apologies. I've been a bit under the weather, and there really hasn't been anything noteworthy to report. That said, here we go:

The largest fire currently burning in California is the Walker Fire in Plumas County south of Susanville. It has now burned 54,612 acres. Containment has slowed since last Wednesday, with containment now at 98 percent. Drier, warmer weather is expected for the area, though fire activity is expected to be minimal.

The second largest fire currently burning in California is the Taboose Fire in the eastern Sierras in Inyo County, and it has been stubborn. It has grown to 10,293 acres, and is only 65 percent contained. Firefighting efforts have been hampered by the rugged terrain in the fire area.

There are 12 active fires burning within California according to Cal Fire. Most of them are small and/or are in remote areas with little impact to populated areas.

There has been no change in the status of the Walker Fire in Plumas County. It is still sitting at 54,612 acres and 98 percent containment. There is still a lot of smoke coming from the burned areas that is effecting air quality in northern California and northwestern Nevada.

The Taboose Fire in western Inyo County is at 10,296 acres, and is now 75 percent contained. There is a Forest Closure Order in effect for the fire area until further notice.

Warmer, drier weather is predicted for much of the state as airflow becomes offshore. High winds are expected in much of northern California. A Fire Weather Warning is in effect for much of northern California. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has announced that they will shut off the power to tens of thousands of customers in an effort to avoid contributing to the fire danger.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) announced that they will shut off power for nearly 50,000 customers across seven northern California counties during the overnight hours. These people will be without electrical power until at least noon, but officials say some customers may be without power for at least 48 hours. The action is in response to predicted fire danger weather for the area, which includes high temperatures and strong winds.

I'm glad PG&E is at least being sensible and turning off their equipment before it gets trashed. That wasn't the case in the past.

No major fires going on at the moment
Although not yet a major fire, its location poses problems for visitors to Yosemite Park and has prompted a few evacuations. Reported yesterday afternoon, the Briceburg Fire has burned 500 acres and forced the closure of the Highway 140 entrance to Yosemite Park. It is currently only five percent contained.

Sensible, yes. But I'd hate to be one of the ones affected by the outage. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s in much of the area, and the outages are expected to far outlast any refrigerator's ability to keep its contents safe.

The infrastucture has to be protected, even if it causes temporary outages. Especially in the case of a major solar flare. It could devastate the country. There are only so many major transformers. If they are destroyed it could take years to replace them.

What If the Biggest Solar Storm on Record Happened Today?

But the big fear is what might happen to the electrical grid, since power surges caused by solar particles could blow out giant transformers. Such transformers can take a long time to replace, especially if hundreds are destroyed at once, said Baker, who is a co-author of a National Research Council report on solar-storm risks.

That's understandable. But the real reason PG&E is doing this is to prevent faulty equipment from starting fires in hot, dry, windy weather conditions, such as what happened in Paradise, CA during the Camp Fire last year.
