Armed Army basic trainee hijacks school bus full of kids

A Fort Jackson trainee is in custody after allegedly hijacking a school bus full of students on its way to Forest Lake Elementary School in Columbia, South Carolina, the Richland County sheriff said.

Lott said that around 7:00 am, a Fort Jackson trainee dressed in physical training clothes left the Army base armed with a rifle. According to Lott, the trainee was in his third week of training.

Lott said the RSCD received a call reporting an individual on Interstate 77 flagging people down and trying to get into cars. Lott said the trainee eventually ended up at a bus stop where children were loading onto the bus and he got on as well. Lott said around the same time, a sheriff's deputy was flagged down by a parent who said their child was on a bus with man who has a gun. Lott said multiple children called their parents on cell phones to report the incident.

"He got on bus and told bus driver he didn't want to hurt him but wanted him to take him to the next town," Lott said.

According to Lott, the suspect brought the kids to the front of bus, where they started asking questions about if he was going to hurt them or the driver. According to Lott, the suspect got frustrated and had the children and driver get off the bus.

According to Lott, the suspect drove the bus a few miles and was "having difficulties operating the bus" before abandoning it with the rifle inside. Lott said the suspect then wandered through neighborhoods trying to get "rice and clothes."

The suspect was eventually spotted near I-77 where he was arrested. Lott said the entire incident lasted about an hour.

I know that one of the purposes of basic Army training is to identify people who aren't mentally/emotionally compatible with military service, but you tend to hope that circumstance reveals itself in a less...f'd up way.

At least it seems like the guy wasn't really interested in the kids as such and really just wanted the transportation; but, still. Freaking scary.

Oh, also f'd up:

School District 2 Superintendent Baron Davis said all of the children were offered counseling services when they arrived at school and the district remains focused on addressing their social and emotional needs.
LOL really, school district? Their bus was hijacked and they were threatened with a rifle and then left stranded on the side of the highway but they were still made to go to school today anyway. Holy crap you can certainly address part of their emotional needs by giving them a day off to recuperate from having been freaking kidnapped by an armed maniac.

You've got a bus-load of kids at the side of the road.

Where else do you take them nearby that is, and that they will recognise as, safe and familiar, where they can immediately be accommodated while they they receive any necessary medical and personal support while their carers are contacted to come and take them home or make whatever other arrangements they think are necessary?

IF it's the case that they only took them there to wait until the parents came and took them home. And MAYBE that's what did happen - but the article doesn't say that, and the phrasing ("when they arrived at school") kinda sorta suggests to me like they were maybe offered a few minutes with a counselor but were otherwise just expected to go on with a normal day "at school".

I dunno. It just seems to me that, since the children were on their way to school when all this started, they're the school district's responsibility until their parents or carers can be contacted.

Someone's got to keep track of them all, for heaven's sake, and take responsibility for them until a carer arrives (which might not be until the end of the school day), and that's the school's job.

Oh no I definitely agree with that, absolutely no question.

I just hope that their parents WERE told to come and pick them up, and not "something happened but everything's okay now so you don't need to come" while telling the kids "there there, now get to class".

I don't know, a sense of routine can be comforting for a kid. But yeah, parents should be notified so they can yadi yadi, etc.

I'm just happy it didn't become the next massacre by police officers. To easy to think of them just spraying everything with a few hundred bullets trying to kill the suspect. Bystanders and passengers be damned, as usual.

Most AWOLs have left the base/camp simply by leaving with other trainees/enlisted when going on maneuvers so they aren't questioned as they appear to be doing what they are supposed to be doing. At least some of the guys I used to know from Ft Polk (army training) and EnglandAFB went AWOL that way. Polk is 50 miles away from where I lived but we still got a lot of their AWOLs. I have no idea if it's still as "bad" as it used to be. Some of those guys chose the army over going to prison.

Charles Peruto Jr.'s website features multiple sections, including ones titled "Black Lives Matter," "The Opioid Crisis" and, on his "About Me" page, "The Girl in My Bathtub."

Good gods.

A girl died in his bathtub. He knew her for six weeks before she died. She was a human being who not only slept with him, but worked for or with him in his office, a well. Tell me one thing about this wierd 'section' on a politico's website: Does he mention her name once?

OF COURSE HE'S A REPUBLICAN.

Finally (I mean about the news of the investigation being made public).

Last fall, the FBI opened an investigation into Dr. Mahendra Amin, the Georgia OB-GYN accused of performing unnecessary gynecological procedures on detained women, and has now expanded its probe to include the doctor’s alleged mistreatment of non-detained former patients, Prism has learned exclusively.

According to attorneys representing immigrant women formerly detained at Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Ocilla, Georgia, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) began questioning immigrants late last year who were operated on by Amin. The interviews were paused earlier this year for unknown reasons, but the investigation now appears to be progressing. The FBI is now also actively reaching out to former patients like Shannon Tatum, one of three Georgia women who spoke to Prism last year alleging medical abuse at the hands of Amin—with some allegations going back decades.
