This is why I’m always repulsed and shocked when, example, at the end of a speech or whatever, political leaders in the US end with god bless us all, good bless our country USA, etc. and everyone claps and nods. It can be after a very noble, or beautiful speech (see Arnold shwartzenegger, pelosi).

I get that they may be deeply religious and I respect other people’s faiths, but I don’t understand why they bring it up in such matters. Is it because they are afraid of being connected to the “godless socialists”? Are people / democrats blind to it? Don’t care cause what harm does it do? Believe it themselves?

Anyway, as someone not from the US, I hope I don’t offend anyone here. I obviously know none of you are part of this type of extreme community as is shown in the above tweet, I just don’t understand bringing god in any way into political speeches, unless maybe they are speaking about a certain holiday, or deaths/ceremony, or just speaking on their own behalf, their own activities.I just feel it makes the extreme ones more acceptable.

Siham’s older sisters, Sumayyah, 19, and Ilham, 17, both wore longer skirts to school without issue.

Hamud, an athletics coach, said his daughter was being denied an education because of her religious beliefs.

“All Siham wants to do is to wear a skirt which is a few centimetres longer than her classmates, and I don’t know why the school has such a problem with this. She is sent home to change into a shorter skirt then return to school later that day – but she isn’t going to change her beliefs in an hour.

“The school is threatening to take legal action against me, but I’m not forcing her to wear a longer skirt – it’s her faith and her decision to make. She used to love school, but now she goes to school crying because of this – it’s heartbreaking.”

You can read about some recent climate science denial fuckery here.

My thought is that all the double talk and lying done by science deniers was dress rehearsal for the current reality denial over the election. I've seen climate science denial from up close over a number of years, and going by that precedent, there is no chance the Republicans will ever drop the election fraud myth.

There were other political stories in the U.S. on Tuesday...

Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, his health director and other ex-officials have been told they’re being charged after a new investigation of the Flint water scandal, which devastated the majority Black city with lead-contaminated water and was blamed for a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, The Associated Press has learned.

Garbage company.

Since it's a British company, I may write to my (Labour) MP to ask him what he thinks of this. I don't like to spam him with articles (I've got you guys for that) so I try not to contact him unless it's directly relevant to me or the constituency, or unless it's relevant to his interests, and I'll have to check which committees he's on.

On the surface, inmates in Prison Industries programs like Midcon Cables’ earn above minimum wage, starting at $7.50 per hour,
Am I correct in thinking that means minimum wage in South Carolina is $7.50 an hour outside the prison?

Here it's £8.72, or about $11.80, rising to £8.91($12.15) in April, which is hardly very generous, in my view. ($7.50 is about £5.50).

Thread -- Don't know if it means anything in the US, but Alan Rusbridger is, or was until now, a very highly regarded former editor of The Guardian, and later a very distinguished public figure. So I shared John Rentoul's shock, and am fascinated to watch as Rusbridger and other leading journalists respond.

Federal Minimum Wage is $7.25/hour. It was last changed in 2009. South Carolina is also $7.25. Some states are higher (Washington is indexed for inflation, currently $13.69, while DC has a rate of $15 going into effect in July with indexing).

Tipped employees can make as little as $2.13 from their employer.

And is that supplemented in any way by state benefits, whether for people with families or for everyone? On top of any specific medical or disability-related benefits to which they might be entitled?
