Is that an accusation?'There are plenty of schlongs in art' – Maggi Hambling defends her nude sculpture of Mary Wollstonecraft
Her tribute to the feminist icon caused outrage at last month’s unveiling, but the artist has no regrets. She hits back at her critics – and explains why this women’s rights pioneer had to be nakedwww.theguardian.com
I don't think she's complaining, though she is rather dismissive of Edward Onslow Ford’s depiction of Shelley's.Is that an accusation?
Actually, she is complaining. Which is her right to.I don't think she's complaining
Whar infuriates me is that history has a pattern of erasing women, and the decision to make Mary Wollstonecraft's statue a monument "to the movement" ignores her unique character and achievements. This monument intended to honor her instead reduces her to an archetype to stand in for masses who should be celebrated, but it ignores the real person it should represent.Actually, she is complaining. Which is her right to.
I don't particularly like the sculpture, but not because of the tiny nude woman capping it off. And which I don't think should be controversial.
I became physically ill watching that person drawing all over a book and could not continue watching the video. This could go in art of history.
